Actually good hidden gems in Amsterdam, Part 3.

Not every great place in Amsterdam has a queue around the block.

Amstelpark for a quieter escape from the city. FOAM for world-class photography. The Tram Museum for a ride through Amsterdam's transport history. Museum Tot Zover for one of the most unusual museums in the city, exploring how different cultures remember and commemorate the dead.

The best parts of Amsterdam are often the places that never make the "Top 10 Things To Do" lists.

If you're planning a trip, our tours are all about helping visitors discover more than the obvious highlights. And for a completely different side of the Netherlands, join one of our guided countryside e-bike tours.

A throwback to Miss Walker's Girls performing on stage in Amsterdam during the 1920s.

The Amsterdam of a century ago was not just canals and bicycles. It was also theatres, variety shows, music halls, and performers entertaining audiences looking for a night out in a rapidly changing city.

Old footage like this offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashions, performances, and atmosphere of Amsterdam between the wars, showing a side of the city that many people never imagine.

If you're planning a trip to Amsterdam, there is plenty of history waiting to be discovered beyond the famous landmarks. And if you'd like to see another side of the Netherlands, join one of our guided countryside e-bike tours and explore the villages, waterways, and landscapes beyond the city.

Amsterdam has some wonderfully strange street names.

From Oude Nieuwstraat (Old New Street) and Nieuwe Nieuwstraat (New New Street), to Gebed Zonder End (Prayer Without End), Onbekendegracht (Unknown Canal), Spooksteeg (Ghost Alley), and Dubbeleworststeeg (Double Sausage Alley).

Some names tell you exactly what used to be there. Others raise far more questions than they answer.

One of the best things about walking around Amsterdam is that the city quietly hides centuries of history in plain sight, often on the nearest street sign.

If you enjoy uncovering the stories behind Amsterdam's oddities, our tours are full of them. And if you'd like to see another side of the Netherlands too, join one of our guided countryside e-bike tours.

We're starting a new series answering the questions we get asked most often about planning a trip to Amsterdam.

Part 1: Should you book things in advance?

The short answer: yes, more than you might think.

Amsterdam is a relatively small city that attracts a huge number of visitors. Popular museums, attractions, tours, and even some restaurants can sell out days or weeks ahead, especially during spring and summer.

That doesn't mean you need to schedule every minute of your trip, but booking your must-do activities in advance can save a lot of disappointment later.

Have a question about visiting Amsterdam? Leave it in the comments, and it might feature in a future episode.

And if a countryside e-bike tour is on your list, don't leave that until the last minute either. Book at thoseamsterdames.com.

Myth: Amsterdam is not a good destination for kids.

It is easy to see where this comes from if you only picture the nightlife or the busiest parts of the city centre, but that version of the story is incomplete.

Amsterdam is actually one of the most family-friendly cities in Europe. Parks are everywhere, neighbourhood playgrounds are easy to find, and getting around by bike or public transport is simple. There are boat trips through the canals, museums designed for children, pancake restaurants, petting farms, and plenty of space for kids to explore safely and independently.

And it fits into a wider picture of life in the Netherlands. Dutch children are consistently ranked among the happiest in the world in international studies, often linked to factors like independence, outdoor play, strong work-life balance, and a culture that prioritises time outside and cycling from an early age.

That becomes very visible in Amsterdam itself. You see children cycling to school, playing in parks after school, and growing up in a city that feels built for movement rather than confinement.

Then just outside the city, the experience expands even more. Villages, windmills, farms, and open countryside give families space to slow down and reset after time in the city.

For many visitors, the biggest surprise is not just that Amsterdam is suitable for kids, but that it actually works extremely well for them.

If you are planning a family trip, our guided countryside e-bike tours are a relaxed way to see another side of the Netherlands beyond the city centre. Find out more at thoseamsterdames.com.

A throwback to ARTIS through the years.

For generations, ARTIS has been part of life in Amsterdam. Families, school trips, tourists, and locals have all passed through its gates, making it one of the city's most recognisable attractions.

Watching old footage like this is a reminder that while Amsterdam changes, some places remain part of the city's story decade after decade.

If you're planning a trip to Amsterdam, make sure you explore more than just the city centre. Our guided countryside e-bike tours take you beyond the canals and into the Dutch surroundings that most visitors never get to experience.

Getting around Amsterdam is part of the experience.

You can walk, cycle, hop on a tram, catch a ferry, take the metro, or even explore by boat. Each one gives you a slightly different view of the city.

The best option depends on what kind of trip you want. Walking helps you notice the details. Public transport gets you across the city quickly. Cycling gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, both in Amsterdam and beyond it.

If you want to experience the city like a local, you can rent e-bikes from Those Amsterdames and head out into the Dutch surroundings as well as the city itself.

Part 5 of Queue Less, Eat Better. Today, poffertjes.

Tiny pancakes, a ridiculous amount of butter, and enough icing sugar to end up on your clothes, no matter how carefully you try to eat them.

They are a Dutch classic for a reason.

For more local food tips beyond the obvious tourist stops, join one of our tours and discover Amsterdam and the Dutch surroundings with a local guide. Find out more at thoseamsterdames.com.
