Clos de la Bussière: a Morey-Saint-Denis monopole with a long history.

Situated at the southern end of Morey-Saint-Denis, close to the border with Chambolle-Musigny, Clos de la Bussière is a 2.59-hectare Premier Cru owned entirely by Domaine Georges Roumier.

The walled vineyard has Cistercian origins and was once owned by the Abbey of La Bussière. The Roumier family acquired the vineyard in the 1950s and has farmed it ever since.

Despite its position towards Chambolle-Musigny, Clos de la Bussière often shows plenty of structure. Its rocky subsoil and iron-rich clay can give the w**es darker fruit, firm tannins and good depth.

It is a great example of why Morey-Saint-Denis cannot simply be described as the middle ground between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny. Even within this small appellation, differences in soil and vineyard position create very different expressions of Pinot Noir.

One Grand Cru, more than 80 different owners.

Clos de Vougeot is one of the most recognisable vineyards in Burgundy. At around 50 hectares, it is also one of the largest Grands Crus in the Côte de Nuits. Today, the vineyard is divided between around 80 different owners, which makes its history quite different from that of a monopole.

It wasn’t always this fragmented. The vineyard was developed by the Cistercian monks of Cîteaux from the early 12th century onwards. Through donations, purchases and exchanges, they gradually brought the land together and eventually became the sole owners of the Clos. They remained so until the French Revolution, when the property was confiscated and sold as a national asset.

Interestingly, the vineyard remained under single ownership for several decades afterwards. It was acquired by Jules Ouvrard in 1818 and remained a single estate until the second half of the 19th century. Over time, sales, inheritance and the division of estates resulted in the patchwork of ownership we know today. The walls and the Grand Cru appellation remain intact, but the parcels inside them can still change hands.

A recent example came in 2025, when Domaine Faiveley donated a small parcel of Clos de Vougeot to the Hospices de Beaune. The vineyard itself doesn’t change, but its map of ownership still can.

This matters because Clos de Vougeot is far from uniform. The upper part of the vineyard has shallower, gravelly soils over limestone, while further down the slope the soils become deeper and richer in clay and alluvium. Combine that with more than 80 owners and their different approaches in the cellar, and the name Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru can represent quite a range of w**es.

What makes an old w**e so interesting?

For us, one of the most fascinating things about w**e is seeing what time can do to a bottle.

A young w**e is often defined by its fruit, structure and freshness. With age, this slowly changes. Tannins soften, primary fruit becomes less dominant and new aromas start to develop. Depending on the w**e, you might find notes of to***co, leather, dried fruit, forest floor or other characteristics that simply weren't there when the w**e was young.

But older doesn't automatically mean better. Not every w**e is made to age for decades, and provenance becomes increasingly important as the years go by. How and where a bottle has been stored can make a huge difference once you start opening w**es that are 20, 30 or even 50 years old.

For us, the fascination is in the development itself. Tasting a w**e decades after it was made gives you a completely different perspective on the w**e, the vintage and sometimes even the producer. It is one of the things that makes older vintages so interesting to work with.

And when an old bottle is still showing beautifully after all those years, that makes it even more special.

One of the things we enjoy most is giving people the opportunity to discover mature w**es for themselves, which is why older vintages have always been an important part of our selection.

Every bottle in our warehouse has its own journey. Before a w**e ever arrives here, we spend a great deal of time learning about where it has been stored and how it has been cared for.

When we source w**es from private collections, we don’t just look at the bottles themselves. We pay close attention to the cellar they come from, the consistency of the temperature, the humidity, the overall storage conditions, and the level of care the collection has received over the years. These details are an important part of a w**e’s provenance and help us preserve its condition for the next owner.

Once the w**es arrive, they continue that journey in our own climate-controlled cellar, where stable conditions remain the priority.
With the current summer temperatures across Europe, many customers choose to leave their w**es safely stored with us a little longer. We are always happy to do this free of charge until the weather is suitable for shipping again.

Pauillac is home to three of Bordeaux's five First Growth estates, yet the appellation is defined by far more than its classification.

Located on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, Pauillac is characterised by deep gravel soils deposited over thousands of years. These soils provide excellent drainage while retaining warmth, creating favourable conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, the grape variety that forms the backbone of most w**es from the appellation.

Although the vineyards share the same appellation, each château has developed its own approach over generations. Differences in vineyard location, grape composition, vine age, fermentation and ageing all contribute to w**es with their own identity. As a result, no single bottle can be considered representative of Pauillac as a whole.

The selection shown here brings together three producers that have each helped shape the appellation's reputation: Château Lynch-Bages, Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Latour. While they share the same geographical origin, they each offer a different interpretation of Pauillac and demonstrate how terroir and w**emaking decisions continue to influence the final w**e.

Exploring these differences is one of the most rewarding ways to better understand Bordeaux. Every bottle reflects the decisions made in the vineyard, the cellar and the vintage in which it was produced.

Why is Romanée-Conti one of the world's most sought-after w**es?

Most people assume the answer is simple: scarcity.

But scarcity is only part of the story.

The Romanée-Conti vineyard covers just 1.81 hectares, producing roughly between 4.000 to 6.000 bottles per year. That alone makes it one of the rarest w**es in the world.

Yet many rare w**es never achieve legendary status.

What sets Romanée-Conti apart is its reputation. For generations, collectors and critics have regarded this tiny vineyard in Vosne-Romanée as one of the greatest expressions of Pinot Noir ever produced.

The result is a w**e that combines rarity, history, terroir and demand in a way few others can match.

And Romanée-Conti is only one of the Grand Crus produced by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, alongside iconic vineyards such as Richebourg, La Tâche and Échezeaux.
