Every great 130-year-old monument deserves a waterproof suit—and today, we finally tailored one! 🏰💧

Installing this vapour barrier has been our toughest act yet. Justin officially premiered the corner above the AC the “corner from hell”—and honestly? It earned the title. 😤 Nothing in this building is level, square, or behaving! 📐🫣

The mission? Ensuring that the sharp, cold air from outside doesn’t clash with our cozy interior and create a damp situation. ❄️🛡️💧

A delicate balance—we had to simultaneously fireproof, seal, and insulate every single inch, layering materials more precisely than a theatre costume department.

It was a marathon of painstaking work, but the barrier is set. The stage is secure. Our history is protected. ✨ ✅ 🎪

Episode 22: WC Wins in a Tight Space. 🔥🤫🇳🇱

Navigating our “packed” 18-square-meter footprint is an intricate dance, but Justin is pulling off quite the show! 🎪

🎪 Safety First: A massive win for our safety record—the WC ceiling has been completely fireproofed and fully sealed. 🔥

🎪 Sound Check: We packed in fresh insulation and treated the battens beneath the neighbour’s staircase (our WC ceiling). Quiet is the finest acoustics. 🤫

🎪 The Big Raise: We adjusted the WC ceiling height to comfortably clear our lead star. Headroom for even our tallest fans! 🇳🇱📏

Episode 21: Fireproofing & plastering. 🔥✨

Safety first on the stage! 🎪

We have been busy fireproofing every corner of the ceiling cavity using lava stone wool and fire sealant. Justin even made a custom tool just to reach those stubborn tiny crevices before sealing everything up tight. 🔨🥽🧤

Our industrial roommate is still working overtime, but that endless stream of water is not going to waste - it is the perfect teammate for mixing our plaster and keeping things clean. 💧🪣

The first layer of plaster is officially on! Justin was in such high spirits, he turned the whole process into a bit of a comedy show. 🎭

Whether it was a planned performance or just the joy of seeing the progress, it was a masterclass in getting the job done. 😂

Episode 20: Building a ventilation chimney. 🧱💡

Behind our WC, under the stairs, the building revealed another secret… a massive hole in the foundation. 🫣

Trapped moisture had completely rotted the wooden staircase, causing the bottom stairs to collapse when touched. 🔨

Justin jumped right in to solve it, building a clever ventilation chimney to pull the dampness out through new vents in the stairs. No more trapped moisture! 💧

The only catch? We ran out of cement! 😳

When I arrived with lunch, I was immediately sent on a high-stakes mission to restock before the existing mix dried out.

Talk about a lunchtime rush! 🥪🏃🏼‍♀️

It is a scorcher today, but Justin is pushing through regardless. ☀️

Out with the old. 🔨
Tearing down the old WC ceiling to get it ready for fireproofing.

It has revealed some super interesting secrets about the way they used to do plastering in the olden days. 🧐
The building is still teaching us its history.

Stripping it all back has resulted in yet more rubble. 🧹🛻

Episode 17: Drying out the Great Wall. 🧱🔥💧

This industrial dryer is absolutely massive. Apparently, it was the only option available!

Every night it pulls nearly 20 liters of moisture.
During the day, it clocks in closer to 30 liters. 💧

Five days in... 250 liters of water, and it’s still going strong.
The bricks remain wet, their deep colour unchanged for now. 🧱🧐

On the bright side, the water is incredibly handy, being repurposed for cleaning and mixing cement! 🪣✨

A productive teammate, but this bulky companion takes up a lot of the stage. 🎪

A bricklaying specialist noted that the darker patches are actually trapped moisture from the old upstairs leak. 💧

Our Audi Q5 stepped up as a “bakkie” 🤫🛻👌🏻

As South Africans we call a pickup truck a “bakkie” it is both a rugged workhorse and an everyday family vehicle. Our “bakkie” did not disappoint, making multiple trips back and forth to the dump.

Bit by bit, day by day. Every step gets us closer. ✨🎪
