A peanut field above the clouds.
We had never quite managed to visit at the right time to see the peanuts growing in the fields. This time, after a long journey along the bumpy mountain roads, we finally made it.
At around 1,000 meters above sea level, peanuts are planted beneath corn on terraced fields carved into the mountainside.
The corn provides gentle shade, keeping the peanut plants from growing too tall and encouraging their roots to spread sideways, helping the pods grow well. It also helps prevent weeds, and with fewer insects at this altitude, the peanuts are grown without pesticides.
Looking out over the mountains below, the farmer told us,
“There is still so much land here where we can grow more.”
This year’s peanuts are quietly growing, surrounded by the Himalayan landscape and generations of local farming wisdom.
