Just one day from officially opening the new shop, we’ve finished the final touches after the 6 months of building and refurbishment work.
After getting all the pianos in place last week, it became apparent that the acoustic was too lively. It can be difficult to predict this aspect as the sound does change once grand piano lids are up, so deflecting the sound from simply bouncing from wall or window to another. It did change but not enough.
We still had a reverb time of nearly 2 seconds, and ideally need under 1 second.
With the help of the guys from Acoustic Solutions we’ve achieved that today. Now pianos can be heard with a lot more clarity and I’m really pleased with the result.
Looking forward to seeing you at our grand opening, 10am to 7pm Thursday to Sunday.

My job is certainly varied. Last week preparing a stunning Steinway grand alongside an orchestra, today working on an 1860 square piano and an 1895 German upright at Mansion House, Kawau Island - north of Auckland. What a glorious commute!! How fortunate to be doing this work in such a stunning and civilised country. I never take this for granted!

Another great week with my friends at the APO and the wonderful Andrea Lam.
We have a superb selection of pianos at Auckland’s Town Hall, each with a choice of action mechanisms. These actions are set up quite differently so as to give the pianist a choice to suit their playing style and repertoire.
On this occasion, the decision was not easy. Andrea loved both set ups, but the concerto, Mendelssohn 1 brings very different challenges between the movements. The action with more clarity and projection is perfectly suited to the first and last movements, and the warmer, more colourful sounding action perfect for the second.
Eventually Andrea decided on the more lively sounding option and played a stunning concert.
It really is a privilege to be part of performances like this! Listen out for the deferred broadcast on Radio NZ Concert.

This thursday we will have the APO’s opening concert of the 2026 season, featuring Rachmaninov’s 3rd piano concerto played by the phenomenal Alexander Gavrylyuk, a remarkable musician and a lovely guy.
It’s an absolute pleasure to be working again for Alexander who has in recent years become a regular visitor to New Zealand’s concert stages. This morning was the piano/action selection at the Auckland Town Hall. It’s always great to have really positive feedback on our pianos from such a highiy respected pianist. This promises to be a great concert.
