It was a pleasure to take the coaching ๐Ÿงข off as the week shifted into Club World Champs and just get back to focusing on some paddling again ๐Ÿค™

Despite little focus on V1 throughout this campaign, the fire and focus switched on automatically as soon as racing began. A few old Spotify playlists, a bit of lane luck, and I managed to pull out an Open V1 500m 4th place amongst some absolute Titans! Stoked. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

A big thank you to Jake Suitauloa and Manukau for not only giving me a seat, but also for supporting the Elite Menโ€™s kaupapa ๐Ÿซก Really appreciate the opportunity to jump in, paddle hard and be part of the crew.

We fell short of a medal in the V6, but managed to come away with a bronze in the V12 with the Masters boys. ๐Ÿฅ‰

Congratulations to all competitors especially our NZ clubs and representatives ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‘†

More than anything, Iโ€™m happy with the effort we put in, the camaraderie, the laughs and the good memories. ๐Ÿค

Last but not least, a massive congratulations to Tahiti, who continue to set the bar for Vaโ€™a. ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Stoked we could give you some good battles out there. But the reality is, without you, we wouldnโ€™t be where we are today. Iron sharpens iron, and this rivalry only continues to push both sides, raise the standard and grow our sport.

Much respect. ๐Ÿค The rivalry only gets better.

One of the goals I wrote down five years ago when I started my first coaching campaign.

Knowing a break was coming, I wanted to give this campaign one last good nudge.

If thereโ€™s anything Iโ€™ve learned from being in this position, itโ€™s that your job isnโ€™t to make great paddlers great. Itโ€™s to help bring great paddlers together and give them the environment to become something even better as a team.

So that became a big part of my mission. Getting our best talent, putting aside clubs for a moment, and creating a foundation where the best could work together towards something bigger than themselves.

And what made this World Champs campaign so special was knowing exactly what we were up against.

Tahiti came with full force ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ซ. Two of the worldโ€™s greatest teams, Shell and OPT, combining their best to create an incredibly strong Elite team. We knew this wasnโ€™t going to be an easy feat.

But what stood out most to me was looking down the side of our own canoe and seeing the depth of talent we had brought together.

Bhutty Boys, Horo, Horouta, Manukau, Mitimitaga, Pineula, Pure OCC, Taurea. Masters, Opens, Juniors.

So many different paddlers, clubs and stories all coming together in one waka.

And, we did it.

New Zealand Elite V12

To beat a Tahiti team of that calibre is something Iโ€™ll never forget. But honestly, the medal is only part of what makes me proud.

Proud of the trust they gave each other. Proud of the work they put in when nobody was watching. Proud of the egos that were left at the door. Proud of the willingness to listen, adapt and put the team first.

My intention was never to be the coach who had all the answers. It was always to create an environment where our paddlers could succeed and then get out of the way and let them do what they do best.

Because ultimately, the paddlers win the races.

And I couldnโ€™t be prouder of this team. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ
