Our Monarch specimens are now reared in-house! 🦋
This means our own native Monarchs can be shown off in all their glory. They are larger and more vibrant than the Peruvian subspecies usually sold in the trade.

Here’s what the process looks like:

Swan plants are grown in a greenhouse until they are ready to be munched down by caterpillars. The swan plants are put outside for a wild Monarch to come by and lay some eggs on them. When enough eggs have been laid, they are then brought back into the greenhouse for protection and once hatched, they receive a continuous supply of swan plants to eat. After 9-20 days, the caterpillars will pupate and turn into a chrysalis. Adult butterflies then eclose from the chrysalis and are soon culled to avoid any aging damage. A portion of adults are released back into the wild to continue their lineage.

The specimens that are culled for our use very likely would have died in the wild. Protecting them and making sure they have plenty of food means almost 100% of eggs live to adulthood. What we release back into the wild is what would have originally survived if they weren’t taken care of. Monarch butterflies lay 300-400 eggs and we only receive about 20 eggs from a single female that has come by our swan plants. The rest are laid elsewhere.
