I found this post on the Horse & Rider Magazine page. This is very true and so very important.

I know it's sometimes difficult to do daily hoof care in the middle of our horrible NZ winters, but try to incorporate routine picking out and treatment as often as you can. Your horse will thank you.

"No hoof, no horse.
Don't disregard your horse's hoof health, neglect hoof maintenance, or underestimate the importance of a good farrier.

Wasn’t that a great weekend we’ve had in Northland? Two whole sunny days in a row! It was a great time to haul in the shedding horses and give them a tidy up, not forgetting their feet of course. My own horses frogs look unusually spectacular for this time of the year - mostly thanks to our Black Magic Hoof Mud treatments over winter. 😊

An interesting read on seedy toe and WLD (white line disease).

White line disease occurs secondary to a hoof wall separation. Clinical signs may vary from not being lame to severe lameness with rotation of the distal phalanx depending on the extent of the disease affecting the inner hoof wall. The author has found that removal of the hoof wall overlying the dis...

Sick of hoof products washing off as soon as you put your horses back in the paddock?

One of the best properties our Black Magic Hoof Mud is known for (other than its incredible healing properties) is its ability to STICK to the hoof. It stays deep in the fissures of the frog to keep on healing. Our customers tell us they can still see the Hoof Mud when they next clean out their horses' feet - still doing it's thing!

Stock up for summer at https://www.horsenhoofnz.com/product-page/black-magic-hoof-mud-250ml. Remember, we are happy to arrange to get it to you if you live in the Far North, to save on postage.

Contains pure locally sourced botanical ingredients to effectively eliminate hoof infections such as Thrush and White Line Disease. Safe for horse and owner, will not kill live tissue and contains no irritants such as tea tree oil or copper sulphate. The mud can be spread on all areas of the sole, i...

With the smell of spring in the air, it's time to clean the mould off our saddles (what a wet winter it's been!) and start riding again.

However, the most important thing to do in preparation for lots of summer riding is to ensure that your horse is comfortable on his feet! And that includes taking a good look at their frog/hoof health.

This winter has had the perfect thrush growing conditions that we've seen in while - relentless rain and mud, which has affected hooves, particularly frogs.

To treat thrush, you need to work WITH the hoof, not against it by applying caustic products that kill pathogens aggressively but also prevent the hoof from growing new healthy tissue. Try a natural approach. Give our Black Magic Hoof Mud a go - you'll be pleased you did.

Why do we use Activated Charcoal in our Mud products? Other than giving it our distinct black colour (so you can see where it’s sticking through all that mud), charcoal has long been used by organic farmers in livestock production as a pesticide but more importantly as a disinfectant. The absorption properties of charcoal help to dry out the hoof and draw away the anaerobic microbes from the frog. It’s a bit messy to work with but our products just wouldn’t be the same without it!

What is thrush and why can it be such a problem in horses?

Medically speaking, thrush is a degeneration of the frog with a secondary anaerobic infection that begins in the central sulcus and collateral grooves.

In plain English, that means that thrush eats away at the frog and starts to grow in the deep dark crevices of the frog where no oxygen is present. Anaerobic bacteria thrive in dark, damp places like these and are very hard to eliminate. Thrush can become a serious problem if ignored.

Sometimes the thrush has eaten away the frog in these areas and can be very close to the frog corium (where the frog grows from). Using an astringent solution (i.e. copper sulphate, gentian violet, bleach) can cause pain and damage these sensitive structures.

That’s why we at Horse β€˜n Hoof only use natural products formulated to work WITH the horse and nature instead of against it. Our products are safe for horses and humans - and smell great too!

With the sun starting to shine (sometimes), and you can now find your horse's feet that have been covered in mud for months, it's time to start thinking of beating the thrush that would have set in over winter. This winter has been particularly bad for seedy toe, thrush and abscesses.

One way to combat these infections is through the use of natural products. You don't want to put anything on your horse that you wouldn't put on your own skin, right?

Introducing Black Magic Hoof Mud – our new product, which has been tested for over a year and has proven itself over the past 12 very wet months.

Made in Northland from all-natural non-caustic products, our hoof mud fights thrush and seedy toe by creating an environment that inhibits fungal and bacterial infections.
