Its no mystery as to why ranunculus are SO popular. I mean have you seen those ruffles?? (Pic from last season)
Here's my handy guide to growing them ππΌ
π From corms: weird, (kinda gross?) looking things that look like little octopuses. Pre soak them for 3 hours until plump then place in potting mix, claws facing down. Don't water them in. Place somewhere warm and sunny until sprouted after 2-3 weeks
πͺ΄ From seedlings/plants: The easy way! Plant them in the ground now, good drainage and full sun, some shade is OK to prolong flowering.
π± From seed: (probably the hardest method): Here's my technique. I sprinkled the seed over damp seed mix, covered with vermiculite and left them in my greenhouse. Then I did nothing. Nada. I ignored them for weeks and presumed it wouldn't work (I've had diabolical results in the past). Low and behold, every seed germinated. I'll take this as a win.
Powdery mildew is the absolute enemy of ranuncs. It's more of a case of 'when' versus 'if'. There are many ways to combat this, including organic sprays and a homemade milk solution (google can help with this)
They will benefit from regular liquid feeds throughout the growing season such as seaweed, and start off with rich soil by adding lots of compost πͺ±
However you grow them, I'd say give it a go! Their growing period is long, but you will be very glad that you did it once they start to flower π
