Once you get a favourite pair of Birkenstocks, you wear them and wear them and then the sole gets a bit thin, the cork gets a bit trashed and the uppers look a bit trollied.

You don't need to bin them. Bring them in or send them in from anywhere in New Zealand and you can get them resoled and tidied up.

Most people have no idea what's inside their RM Williams.

That insole board? 3.5mm leather. Not cardboard like most boots these days. It'll handle wet, dirt, hard wear, and still be going strong years from now.
If you've got a pair, don't save them for good. Give them heaps.

That was one of the things I got into with Jim Mora on RNZ Sunday. We covered a good bit of shoe care, stretching tight shoes with a jam jar and why some polish does more harm than good.

Do shoe polishes soak in much?
Vegetable tanned leather. Five products. One question: does it actually soak in?
Leather Balm, Saphir, Tarrago shoe cream, Dubbin. Cut a slice and check. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope.
Neatsfoot oil? That soaked all the way through.
So here's what I actually do on work boots. Neatsfoot oil first, right through the leather. Then a top coat of Dubbin, beeswax, Nikwax, Snow Seal, whatever you've got. The oil feeds and lubricates the fibres, the top coat seals it and keeps water out.
Just don't use Dubbin on dress boots unless you like picking dust and fluff off them all day.
