Business privileges have been given to foreigners, especially Chinese nationals. They now own and control a very large percentage of businesses in the country.
Our Chinese brothers even enter the informal market by venturing into buai sales and even ten-toea roll-bruce sales.
Foreigners dominate the length and breadth of the country, creating strong competition for Papua New Guineans in both the formal and informal business sectors.
We urge the government to review its policies on foreign business ownership and ensure that Papua New Guineans are given greater opportunities to participate in and own businesses.
We should not allow unfair business practices or exploitation to disadvantage our own people.
It is difficult to see PNG citizens owning businesses on a large scale in countries such as China and Australia.
So why are we giving foreigners such privileges in business, public offices, and even parliamentary positions? Are we truly as “primitive” as our own MP, Justin Tkatchenko, has labelled us?
Papua New Guineans deserve equal opportunities in their own country. Our government must put the interests of its citizens first and create an environment where our people can grow, own businesses, and compete fairly.
