The mail is here! More letters from pen pals all around the world have arrived!

Lost Books Cebu is part of a global letter-writing initiative, The Sunday Letter Project. It invites people from everywhere to write a handwritten letter to friends, loved ones, strangers, or themselves.

Through a network of independent creative spaces known as letter-keepers, which includes Lost Books Cebu, you can collect a letter from our shop or start sending one using our shop’s physical address.

Another week is about to go by. Do you still remember how it started? Yet this week will be remembered by so many Cebuanos because it is when we lost a dear member of our community.

When life goes by so fast, as if everything comes and goes like a blip, may you find comfort in nature and in the words of poets and writers.

Last weekend, we hosted a book talk to mark the publication of the second volume of the bestselling book, "How I Became a Writer: Essays by Filipino Writers." It was inspiring and insightful to learn about the creative processes of some of our country's most accomplished storytellers.

We appreciate the generous time of one of the book's featured writers, Danton Remoto, and the book's editor, Cecilia Manguerra Brainard. One important moment in the event was when everyone celebrated the life of our beloved National Artist for Literature, Dr. Resil Mojares, who has recently passed away.

Thank you to all our patrons who joined us with their enthusiasm and valuable input. Moments like this are what we value most in our little bookstore.

Copies of the book will be available next week, after the Manila International Book Fair.

It saddens us to announce to all our patrons and community members that the indomitable National Artist for Literature, Dr. Resil Mojares, has passed away. It breaks our hearts even more knowing that he just visited our bookshop two days ago. This photo was taken during his visit.

He was all smiles that day and even noticed that we have many more books now than during his last visit. He mentioned that he is looking forward to the opening of another independent bookshop in Mandaue City.

This exchange warmed our hearts because when he visited us in 2024—we had just opened at that time—he said that there should be more bookshops opening and that bookshops should continue to innovate and to try out new things. Today, many bookshops have started opening in Cebu, which we believe made him very happy.

Thinking back to two days ago, it was a little strange how conversational he was. He used to just keep to himself and talk softly. This time, he was relaxed, comfortable, and talkative. He bought three books: “Impossible Is Not So Easy” by Joel Rocamora, “Verbal Arts in Philippine Indigenous Communities” by Herminia Meñez Coben, and “Sapantahàng Wika” by Virgilio Almario. We do not know if he has already started reading any of them.

Before he left, he mentioned that cultural institutions should seek out creatives and artists on the ground, doing the real work, and give them all the support that they need.

He is right, and so we will do our own part—here in our little bookshop—to continue uplifting the voices of our local writers and storytellers.

When our conversation was over, he placed the books inside his carry-on tote bag and grabbed his walking cane. Then we hailed a taxi cab for him because he did not bring his car this time. We did not know that that would be the last time we would see him.

Cebu will never be the same without him. The Visayas region will never be the same without him. The entire Philippines will never be the same without him.

We are kicking off our September strong with the launch of the second volume of the bestselling book, “How I Became a Writer: Essays by Filipino Writers,” this Saturday, September 5, at 3:00 PM at the bookshop.

Celebrated writers Danton Remoto and our very own Cecilia Manguerra Brainard, who came all the way from the US, are joining us.

This new volume of “How I Became a Writer” brings together 25 accomplished Filipino fictionists, poets, journalists, historians, playwrights, academics, memoirists, and comics creators, whose works have enriched Philippine literature across genres and generations.

Inviting readers into the lives and creative journeys of these writers, this book is a wealth of inspiration to aspiring authors, students, and anyone who appreciates the enduring power of storytelling.

This event is open and free to all. However, due to our limited space, we kindly request that you arrive early to secure a seat.

We woke past six in the morning to forage in the forest. The weather was perfect. The breeze, the trees, the birds—all seemed to greet and welcome us. The pail we carried to hold our harvest filled quickly. We then returned to the farmhouse for breakfast, then walked into the forest again to reach a natural spring for a cold bucket bath.

Last June, we traveled to Eastern Visayas, to the province of Leyte, for a rare opportunity to visit the homestead of Visayan writer and farmer Omar Khalid. We joined other writers from Bathalad Sugbo. We had a great conversation with Omar about nature and how it has changed him and informed his writing.

Omar is the award-winning author of “Dinhi sa Yuta, Maingon sa Langit: Mga Sugilanon” and “Kining Inalisngaw sa Akong Tutunlan: Mga Sugilanon.” These books, among others, are available in the bookshop.

It was a dear patron who introduced us to this elegantly crafted, beautifully produced publication. He had just come home from Taiwan, and he mentioned there was one magazine he could not put down. It was a magazine about finding oneself through travel. Coincidentally, it bears the same name as our bookshop.

After looking into it and reaching out to the amazing people behind this work, we are happy to announce that issues 10 and 11 are now available at the bookshop.

Lost magazine is an annual publication that features real travel stories, personal reflections, and epiphanies from people around the world. Told from the traveller’s perspective, these stories are filled with adventure, surprising encounters, emotional dialogue, and reflective thoughts, offering a glimpse into the traveller’s inner landscapes.

We thought it was going to be a run-of-the-mill day when, to our surprise, we found two letters left on the step of our little bookshop.

We knew exactly what they were, for we had been anticipating them for a long time. It was all about the thrill of finding out where the letters would come from.

We were beyond delighted to find out that they were pen pal letters from Meticulous Ink and Beyond Text Bookstore! The letters were picked up right away by our anticipating patrons who were aware of the initiative.

Lost Books Cebu is part of a global letter-writing initiative that originated from the brilliant minds of Rebecca and Karl at Wildflower Illustration Co. (Wildflower Illustration Co.). It is called The Sunday Letter Project (The Sunday Letter Project), and it invites people all over the world to take a free pledge to write one handwritten letter every Sunday to their friends, loved ones, strangers, or themselves.

We welcome Davaoeño author, newspaper columnist, and artist Grace Gaston-Dousel to the bookshop! Her book, “I Married an Alien: The Quirks of a Cross-Cultural Marriage,” is now in store.

On difficult matters like language, parenting, and even in-law relations, the book offers practical advice on how to properly handle the many challenging aspects that come with marrying across cultures.
