FIRST DEAF LPT ✨
At 27, Ruth Melli Sayo has become a licensed professional teacher after passing the Licensure Examination for Teachers, marking a powerful milestone for Deaf education and inclusive learning.
Ruth is the first Deaf graduate of the Bachelor of Special Needs Education program at the University of Southeastern Philippines College of Education, proving that access, support, and determination can open doors that once seemed difficult to reach.
Her journey was not easy. Growing up Deaf, Ruth experienced discrimination, bullying, and isolation. During college, the shift to online learning during the pandemic brought additional barriers, including limited access to sign language interpretation and challenges in understanding some subjects.
Despite these, Ruth continued with the support of her family, classmates, teachers, and the BSNED program, which helped provide accommodations for her learning needs.
She chose education because she wanted to help children, especially Deaf learners who need mentors who understand their experiences and believe in their potential.
For Ruth, becoming a licensed professional teacher is more than a personal victory. It is a message to young Deaf Filipinos that their dreams are valid, their abilities are real, and their place in classrooms, professions, and leadership is possible.
Congratulations, Teacher Ruth! ✨
