Because the big book stores do not really support local indie authors. We love independent book stores! The young people now are actively looking for filipino authors and these community 'third spaces' are the new gathering hubs for arts and culture in different cities across the archipelago. A LESSER FEAR OF WATER by Yvette Pantilla-Carpio is now available at Solidaridad Bookshop!

I attended the University of the Philippines Manila from 1996 to 2002. Every week, I would make it a point to visit the legendary Solidaridad bookshop along Padre Faura Street, Ermita, Manila. The bookshop was founded, owned and managed by the late National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose and his wife Teresita. Their family now manages it.

Never in my wildest dreams or in my imagination thirty years ago did I think that I would one day be married to a writer whose book would grace the shelves of this bookshop, along with local and foreign literary greats. Well, it happened. And it’s pretty cool actually.

P.S. The day we delivered Yve’s books was Ash Wednesday. 2025 also marks the 60th year of Solidaridad bookshop.
