A fracture can heal. But sometimes, the clot it sets in motion can become the bigger threat.

After a leg fracture, patients spend more time resting and moving less. Add the trauma from the injury itself, and the risk of developing a blood clot in the leg can increase.

And sometimes, that clot doesn’t stay there.

When a clot travels to the lungs, it can cause a pulmonary embolism, it’s a serious condition that can quickly become life-threatening.

That’s what made this recent case at St. Luke's Medical Center Global City one worth celebrating.

Led by Dr. Kristoff Tanseco, with Dr. Roscoe Cruz and Dr. Billy David assisting, and Dra. Francisco as the referring physician, the team successfully treated the PE using the Penumbra Indigo® System.

From a complication that can happen after something as common as a fracture, to a successful intervention that helped address the clot when it mattered most. 🙏🏻

Patient had just given birth. 9 days after, she could barely breathe.

Pregnancy and the weeks after delivery are a time when the body naturally becomes more prone to forming blood clots. This helps prevent excessive bleeding during childbirth, but it also increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), when a clot travels to the lungs and blocks blood flow.

This was the situation faced by one of our patients at Makati Medical Center.

With a significant clot burden in the pulmonary arteries, Dr. Glessica You-Kato, experienced specialist in managing complex vascular cases, assisted by Dr. Limonick Lacson, moved swiftly to clear the obstruction. Using the Penumbra Indigo System, they aspirated the thrombi out and restored pulmonary blood flow immediately.

And then came the moment that mattered most:

Patient could breathe normally again. 🙏🏻

From a frightening postpartum complication to a successful intervention, this case shows what experienced hands and timely treatment can mean when a patient is in critical condition.

The diagnosis changed. The clock didn’t.

A 52-year-old physician with autoimmune hemolytic anemia was initially treated for pneumonia after presenting with progressive shortness of breath. But as her condition worsened, the picture no longer fit.

Hypoxemia. Persistent tachycardia. Rapid clinical deterioration.

A CT pulmonary angiogram revealed the real problem: a large saddle pulmonary embolus with right ventricular strain.

With significant clot burden and worsening hemodynamics, the ManilaMed Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) was immediately activated.

The team proceeded with aspiration thrombectomy using the Penumbra Indigo System, removing the pulmonary embolic burden and restoring blood flow.

Pulmonary embolism can hide behind symptoms that look deceptively familiar. Recognizing when the clinical picture doesn’t add up can change the course of care.

Recognized by the World Stroke Organization as the first and only Advanced Stroke Center in the Philippines, University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital continues to set the bar for advanced stroke care.

In another successful aspiration thrombectomy, Dr. Dennis Sacdalan, together with Dr. Toby Paulino and the UP-PGH Cathlab team, used the Penumbra System RED 68 to remove the clot and restore blood flow fast, achieving reperfusion in just 15 minutes.

Some clots don’t want to let go.

At AUF Medical Center, Dr. Don Ochoco took on a challenging superior vena cava (SVC) thrombosis involving a stubborn subacute clot.

Using the Penumbra Indigo System CAT8, the team successfully removed the thrombotic burden and restored venous flow through the SVC.

SVC thrombosis can significantly impair venous drainage from the head, neck, and upper extremities. When the clot persists, symptoms can become increasingly difficult to manage.

The clot may be tough. But the response team was tougher.

Another neuro case at Asian Hospital and Medical Center, led by Dr. Jay Villavicencio, assisted by Dr. Noel Debuque and the Asian Cathlab team.

The challenge? Stubborn thrombi that needed to come out FAST.

Using the Penumbra System with RED 72, Dr. Villavicencio was able to track through the anatomy and aspirate the clot effectively. Paired with the Penumbra Engine, RED 72 provides high thrombus removal force to help tackle clot when aspiration matters most.

No matter what the weather looks like outside, stroke doesn’t wait.

Another neuro case, this time with the Penumbra RED 72.

Led by Dr. Samuel Ding Bangoy, Dr. AJ Lpre and Dr. Marc Collado, the team successfully tracked the RED 72 through challenging, tortuous anatomy and performed aspiration to remove the clot.

Different challenges. Different anatomy. Same goal: getting to the clot and getting it out fast.

In an acute ischemic stroke, a clot can suddenly cut off circulation to areas supplied by the affected vessel. When the middle cerebral artery (MCA) is involved, rapid treatment is especially important because it supplies regions responsible for functions such as movement, sensation, speech, and language.

At Southern Philippines Medical Center, Dr. Doc Tim Snchz, Dr. Benjamin Ong and Dr. AJ Lpre successfully treated the occluded MCA and achieved reperfusion.

Using the Penumbra System with RED 68, the team navigated through the patient’s tortuous anatomy and removed the clot in just two minutes.

Two minutes in the angio suite can mean a very different future for a stroke patient.

It takes experienced hands, sound clinical judgment, and technology that can keep up when time matters.

A first for St. Elizabeth Hospital, Inc. in General Santos City.

The Bien-Air Origo Drill System with Rapido Motor was used for the first time at SEHI during an emergency trauma case involving a right frontoparietal craniectomy and hematoma evacuation.

The case was led by Dr. Raymund Gagwis, with Dr. Michael Magbanua as anesthesiologist, and supported by the OR team:
