24 December 1903 – The Motor Car Act, which mandated the registration of motor vehicles, became law. It took effect on 1 January 1904, though the first number plates were issued in late 1903. The “A1” registration plate was issued by London county council on 24 December 1903 to the second Earl Russell, who camped outside the London County Council issuing office overnight to be sure he got it, (he was the brother of the philosopher Bertrand Russell). AFGHAN – SOVIET WAR 1979
24 December 1979 – The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan under the pretext of upholding the Soviet-Afghan Friendship Treaty of 1978, to aid the Afghan communist government in its conflict with anticommunist Muslim guerrillas during the Afghan War. After 9 years, one month, three weeks and one day the war ended on 15 February 1989 after Geneva Accords (1988), Soviet forces withdrawn from Afghanistan.
The Soviet–Afghan War was a conflict wherein insurgent groups known collectively as the Mujahideen, as well as smaller Maoist groups, fought a nine-year guerrilla war against the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan and the Soviet Army throughout the 1980s, mostly in the Afghan countryside.
They saw the Christian or atheist Soviets controlling Afghanistan as a defilement of Islam as well as of their traditional culture.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY
December 24, 1951 - North African country LIBYA gained independence from its colonial masters, FRANCE and BRITAIN. Independence came after the U.N. General Assembly decree in 1949 that Libya become independent on or before the first day of 1952. Before independence, Libya had been under various regimes, including the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Ottomans, Italians, and finally, France and Britain.
A constitution was drawn up and King Idris al-Sanusi (Idris-I), head of the Sanūsiyyah (a Sufi Muslim brotherhood), declared the country independent (United Kingdom of Libya).
Muammar Gaddafi led a coup d’état that ousted the sitting king on September 1, 1969. This led to the establishment of the “Libyan Arab Republic”, and this date was recognized instead of December 24.
However, after the demise of Gaddafi in 2011, Libya Independence Day was reinstated as a national holiday. It commemorates the independence of Libya from its colonial masters.
