On August 9th — here are 3 big ones that happened today in history:
1. 1945 — Atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki
Three days after Hiroshima, a U.S. B-29 dropped the "Fat Man" bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. An estimated 40,000 to 80,000 people were killed. Days later Japan surrendered, ending World War II.
2. 1965 — Singapore becomes independent
Singapore had joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963, but after political disagreements and racial tensions, the Malaysian parliament voted to expel it. On August 9, 1965 it reluctantly became an independent country under Lee Kuan Yew.
3. 1936 — Jesse Owens wins his 4th gold in Berlin
At the Berlin Olympics, in front of N**i Germany, African-American track star Jesse Owens won his fourth gold medal in the 4x100m relay. His team set a world record of 39.8 seconds that stood for 20 years.
