Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were handed an unusual lesson in Baku ahead of this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, surrounding the game of chess.

The Ferrari duo are both avid chess players and took part in an activation with Azerbaijani chess Grandmaster Teimour Radjabov.

Radjabov initially watched on and offered advice as Hamilton and Leclerc played against each other, before they paired up to take on the Grandmaster.

The activation demonstrated the mental intensity of both motorsport and chess, highlighting the similarities between the two very different activities.

While not a US president, Benjamin Franklin (1705 - 1790) was an avid chess player. He improved his game greatly during his years in England, where chess was much more of an established tradition than in America. In fact, Franklin is the first known chess player in the Americas.

After describing the effects chess can have on one’s perception of life he describes a set of moral rules that a chess player should hold, including to not cheat and not disturb the opponent. Franklin suggests that the opponent be told about mistakes he makes, for example if he would lose a piece.

Those wanting a decent size, usable, light weighted travel set of acceptable quality for a very reasonable price could do far worse than buy this set. The fact that the board is wooden, folds(great for storage), and has tailored spaces to house the pieces when travelling is enough to recommend it. All round excellent value for a starter / travel set.

Herbert George (H. G.) Wells was born in Bromley, Kent, England on September 21, 1866. He was a prolific chess writer and a bad chess player. He included chess in many of his stories and wrote an essay called Concerning Chess in the late 19th century.

Wells seems to have learned chess around 1891 and played with his father, Joseph, and brother, Fred.

Alexander Alexandrovich Kotov (12 August 1913 – 8 January 1981) was a Soviet chess grandmaster and author. He was a Soviet chess champion, a two-time world title Candidate, and a prolific writer on the subject of chess. Kotov served in high posts in the Soviet Chess Federation, and wrote most of his books during the Cold War. The importance and breadth of Kotov’s work rank him among the all-time greats in this field.
