Start Up Gardening

Don't fret about finding a suitable plot in your backyard, simply start a container garden anywhere you'd like. Plus this way you can ensure the soil is fertile and easily prevent weeds! You'll be more likely to follow through with your gardening if your container garden is near your back door or a window you use often. First start small, then work your way up to a bigger garden.

Gardening Tips to Help You Garden Like a Pro

Whether you’re brand new to gardening or a seasoned green thumb, there’s always something to learn about gardening. Sometimes, having a couple of tips up your gardening gloves can really help you make the most of your garden.

Here are some of our favourite gardening tips:

Educate yourself about gardening. Whether you’re planting a vegetable garden or a purely aesthetic, flower-based garden, learn about the types of plants you’re considering planting and their needs.

Keep notes about your garden each season. Keeping a detailed journal of your garden throughout gardening season can help you learn from your mistakes, as well as help you recreate situations that went well.

Use your local resources. Next time you head to the nursery to stock up on some plants for the season, consider chatting with the people who work there to see what plants they recommend or suggestions they have.

Know your planting conditions. Get to know your hardiness zone, as well as the specific conditions of your neighbourhood (for example, whether you live in an urban area) and your soil.

Know whether your garden faces north, south, east, or west. Knowing this will help you place plants so that they get adequate light or have protection from cold winds.

Plant in groups of three. When you’re shopping for plants, never buy just one of each variety. Plant at least three of each variety you choose for a put-together look.

Embrace the shade. Even if your garden is comprised of predominantly shady areas, you can plant beautiful, shade-loving plants like hostas and herbs.

Water every plant after moving it. Whether you’re moving a plant from a pot to the garden or to a different bed, watering it will help the roots adjust to their new surroundings.

Let your garden do most of the work. While there’s no such thing as a no-maintenance garden, letting your garden do its thing can have great benefits. Resist the urge to tidy too much in the fall or to cut back a plant that has flowered, as it may surprise you and continue to add beauty to your landscape.

Underwater, don’t overwater. Bringing plants back from the brink if they haven’t had enough water is easier than saving them after you’ve watered them too much. Plants are good at telling you when they need water (most start to droop), whereas any warning signs that you’ve overwatered often mean it’s too late.

Don’t strive for perfection. Gardens are constantly changing, growing and evolving, and your garden is never going to be “perfect.” Use your energy on getting joy out of your garden and from the plants that are doing well, rather than stressing over the things that are going wrong.

Gardening has long been a quintessential past-time. The popularity of television programmes, such as Ground Force (for those that remember the glory of this show) and Gardener’s World, are a testament to our gardening heritage.

So, to kick things off, we thought we’d take a bit of a tongue in cheek peek at the different types of gardening styles you might find amongst your friends and family. You may even recognize yourself in one of these gardening personality types, whether you’re a Passionate Gardener, a Farmers’ Market Fanatic, or anything in between

To get a thorough reading of your soil’s pH and nutrient levels, send a sample to your local nursery or cooperative extension, suggests garden expert Home Depot, or any gardening store.) The results will tell you how acidic or alkaline your soil is, which affects how plants absorb nutrients. Since different plants thrive best in different pH levels, this test will help you decide what to plant or indicate how you should treat the soil.

One of the main reasons people don’t garden, I suspect, is simply a lack of time. Actually, lack of time is probably the single most common reason that many of us don’t do so many of the things we would like to do. Most people would like to slow down and spend a bit more time on things they care about, but just can’t see their way to it. So isn’t taking your time while gardening simply another example of wishful thinking

Like with any garden, the best chance at having blossoming and thriving plants all comes down to the ones you select. It is important to choose plants that are suited to your garden site- not ones that you know are going to struggle in the given environment.
Plants that are known to adapt well to your climate and conditions will grow and thrive without a lot of attention and hard work. Whereas if you choose plants that are known to have difficulty growing in your climate conditions, they will require a lot more hard work to boost its natural defences to keep them healthy and strong.

The Homeowners felt as if their back yard was a 'fish bowl' as every time they went outside to use their deck or yard the neighbors could see what they were doing. Screening was the first priority coupled with four season interest and complimentary plantings. Rather than put up a green wall around the entire perimeter I selectively screened some views and we kept open other long views between the homes. A seating area was planned for and future plans of a pool were planned.
