** HOW A DOCTOR MADE THE AURA VISIBLE A CENTURY AGO **
We tend to file the aura under esoterica, yet one of the first serious studies of it came not from a mystic but from a physician. Walter Kilner worked at St Thomas' Hospital in London, dealing with electrotherapy, very much a man of science. And in 1911 he published a book with a coldly medical title, The Human Atmosphere, describing something his contemporaries never quite forgave him for.
Kilner noticed that when you looked at a person through glass stained with a particular dye called dicyanin, a faint glow around the body became visible. He made such glass slides, fitted them into goggles and began observing patients in bright light against a dark background. Again and again he saw the same thing, a thin luminous shell extending a few centimetres from the body. He even divided it into layers and named them, the etheric double, the inner aura and the outer aura.
What is most striking is that Kilner did not treat this as a miracle. He assumed he was seeing some form of radiation beyond the ordinary range, closer to the ultraviolet, and that the eye, properly tuned, could catch it. In essence he was the first to say out loud a simple thing, this is not a matter of being gifted, it is a matter of the human eye being trainable.
The medicine of his day received him coldly, few could reproduce the result, and Kilner was all but forgotten. But the method outlived its author. That same Kilner way of staining glass sits at the heart of modern aura goggles, so anyone who wants to test it for themselves can now do exactly what an English doctor did in his clinic a hundred years ago.
So what do you think, is the aura physics we simply cannot measure yet, or something that instruments will never capture at all? ))
