Let’s talk about batch differences in natural perfumery, or in perfumes built with a high percentage of natural materials.
It’s no secret that our perfumes are largely botanical in composition, usually around 70-100% natural materials depending on the scent: essential oils, absolutes, CO₂ extracts, concretes, waxes, resins and more. Aroma molecules are used mostly for toning, shading, improving structure, or creating notes that simply don’t exist as natural perfumery materials.
So why can the same perfume smell slightly different from one batch to another? Aren’t we following exactly the same formula every time?
We are. The formula stays the same. The materials don’t.
Synthetic aroma molecules can usually be produced with a very high level of consistency. Naturals are another story entirely.
Think of w**e, coffee, tea or even fruit. The same grape variety grown in the same region can taste slightly different from one harvest to the next. Botanical perfumery materials behave in much the same way.
The scent of an essential oil or absolute can be influenced by countless tiny variables: the region where the plant was grown, weather during the season, rainfall, temperature, soil, the exact moment of harvesting, the condition of the plants, extraction methods, processing techniques and even subtle differences between productions from the same supplier.
Sometimes these variations are barely perceptible. Sometimes a certain facet becomes a little greener, darker, sweeter, smokier or more floral.
And that is part of the beauty of working with nature. Nature does not manufacture identical copies of itself. Each harvest carries a little fingerprint of the place and moment it came from, and occasionally that fingerprint becomes visible in the finished perfume.
There is another important factor too: maturation.
A freshly blended perfume is still finding its balance. During the first weeks and months, materials continue integrating, sharper edges soften, heavier notes settle into the structure and the composition becomes increasingly cohesive. In our experience, a new batch can continue shifting noticeably for up to around three months, and subtler evolution may continue far beyond that.
This means that a sample poured from a batch blended several months ago, or even a year ago, may smell somewhat different beside a bottle from a freshly matured batch, despite being made from exactly the same formula.
We like to think of perfume a little like w**e: it is alive in the bottle, and time is one of its ingredients.
So when you notice tiny differences between batches of a natural-heavy perfume, you are not necessarily experiencing inconsistency. Sometimes you are simply smelling the nature of the materials themselves.
A little unpredictability. A little individuality.
And perhaps… a little accidental witchcraft. ✨
