The child was eventually turned down from his invitation to play with his mom, and they both left the store to continue with their errands.
I thought it was a little sad that firstly, the young child recognise that it was just "pretend" instead of immersing in a truly imaginative world, and secondly, that the child was dissuaded to 'play', even a simple reciprocal gesture of accepting the child's pretend ice cream cone offered to his mom was rejected.
We are so busy preparing children for a 'real world' that could be gray, rigid, demanding, we rush them toward developing 'useful' skills, and forget that imagination in oxygen to the soul. We don't outgrow the need for wonder; we just forget where we hid it. We spend our days being 'productive', but we're losing our spark. Joining a child in play isn't just a gift to them, but an invitation to yourself; a chance to put down the phone, shed the 'adult' armor, and remember to laugh for no reason.

Don't just watch them grow- grow with them.
