BENEFICIAL SHOCK! IS BACK

with magazines migrating online in droves, you’d be forgiven for thinking the industry is on its way out. but not entirely, when you’ve got people like the guys behind who believe The Magazine isn’t dead, it just needs a breath of fresh air.

🎬 BENEFICIAL SHOCK! is the movie magazine you’ll want to get for your film buff friend. no tea on any celebrities here – the only thing it’s interested in serving is absurdly intricate art and thoughtfully written critiques and analyses of film. Lots of issues to choose from, each exploring a wild spectrum of themes and topics from the saddest goodbyes in cinema and Hollywood’s casting couch to Superman’s identity crisis and road trip tropes.

LIMITED TIME OFFER: enjoy 5% OFF with a minimum order of any two copies of Beneficial Shock (including instocks!). preorder closes 26 Oct. link in bio to order!

“I would always be a few moments behind... A joke that no longer fits the conversation.”

back in March 2024, did an open call for writers and illustrators across Southeast Asia to submit a story about what delay means to them, looming milestones, missed connections, and all.

DELAY: A Comics Anthology is the result, a collection of stories that show time as friend and foe. time is the diverger of paths between two friends with increasingly different fates. it is the resource slipping away from a girl and her father, but also the unexpected gift a disenfranchised young person stumbles upon.

step in and out of these 11 stories that explore how we form our identities and lives in tune (and sometimes out of sync with) the rhythms of modern society. a touchingly relevant and diverse anthology curated by veteran comic book editors Charis Loke and Paolo Chikiamc that invites you to reflect and reclaim time in your own way.

preorders come with a limited-edition semi-transparent bookmark and free shipping! link in bio to order ⏰

poets write the best curses ✍️

the tonal shift from passive aggression to a wound-up pain, tightly coiled and ready to spring alive any moment, is the perfect expression of Wahid Al Mamun’s rage. it’s a rage that mourns the fracturing of home and identity, struggles between national and personal history, and cries in solidarity with migrant workers.

stubborn and hopeful; the wild geese are heading home again indeed 🪿

⁉️ SURPRISE YOUR SHELF NO. 15: THE SLOW PRESS

SURPRISE YOUR SHELF is back! Every 2 months, we invite a different person to pick a mystery book. We give you clues along the way, but you only find out what it is when you receive it.

Our curators all come from different backgrounds and walks of life, each with their own personal tastes and experiences. This way, each edition of Surprise Your Shelf always brings a unique perspective and you’ll never quite know what to expect!

and for the first time, our curator is not any one person but a collective. you know and love the team behind ! now they’re here with a title they handpicked just for you 🍲

anyone familiar with their work will probably guess they’ve picked a book about food, and you’d be right. so in this edition of SYS, what WILL surprise you is the contents of the book. because their pick is unlike any other food-related title we’ve seen — it’s about the strangest of kitchens and the unlikeliest of chefs.

if you cook, the recipes here are unlike any others you’ll find. if you don’t, you’ll be enthralled anyway by the stories behind those recipes. they’re a stirring showcase of the human capacity for creativity during a time of lack, and speak to a very particular time in Singapore’s history.

little details about the book’s production also show the very ingenuity the book seeks to highlight with moving interviews and brilliant photographic recreations of dishes that will blow your mind at how much people can accomplish with so little. this SYS edition is an unforgettable read that will have you thinking about the freedoms of food and cooking, and move you by how the human spirit will always adapt and persist.

swipe for some clues and The Slow Press team’s thoughts on the book, plus find out what else they like reading. link in bio to order by 27 August - comes with free delivery and a note from the curator!

⁉️ SURPRISE YOUR SHELF NO. 14: REBECCA

SURPRISE YOUR SHELF is back! Every 2 months, we invite a different person to pick a mystery book. We give you clues along the way, but you only find out what it is when you receive it.

Our curators all come from different backgrounds and walks of life, each with their own personal tastes and experiences. This way, each edition of Surprise Your Shelf always brings a unique perspective and you’ll never quite know what to expect!

this edition, our guest curator is , photographer and founder of . Casual Poet Library has to be one of the most wholesome things that’s come into existence recently, fueled by the sincerity and love of its volunteers and librarians 🥰

WELL, LEAVE ALL THAT AT THE DOOR WITH REBECCA’S PICK – a decidedly very not wholesome read. this is the macabre tale of a man with a unique talent and a singular obsession. what begins as an earnest desire to hone his craft turns into unstoppable obsession that destroys lives around him.

but while this is a story of murder and madness — the kind all you true crime docu enjoyers will appreciate — it’s also a saddening look at how we collectively decide who deserves to be loved and adored, with an unforgettable ending that takes the themes of desire and possession to a perfectly gory crescendo.

swipe for Rebecca’s thoughts on the book, plus find out what else she likes reading. link in bio to order by 31 July - comes with free delivery and a note from the curator!

NOTE: Due to supply issues, we may only be able to send the books out in end Sept! pls take this into consideration before ordering.

💥SURPRISE YOUR SHELF #13 REVEAL 💥

“In the long and circuitous march of history, these struggles would be mere blips of nothing. But it is this same history that gives these struggles — our struggles — meaning”

“What more can you write about history?”, Lio Mangubat imagines his late uncle asking him. and... as it turns out, quite a lot. SILK, SILVER, SPICES, SLAVES is a slim volume that proves size doesn’t matter — each of the 13 essays here are fairly short, succinct, and absurdly effective at piecing together the most surprising parts of the Philippines’ history.
gay’s Surprise Your Shelf selection is a masterpiece that spins tales of galleons, fickle spirits, long-lost maps, and the secret history of otters. Mangubat’s flair for storytelling is undeniable; doling out the incredible research at a very digestible pace, and imbuing the facts with just the right amount of emotion at just the right time.

how did the Philippines become obsessed with the all-American sport of baseball? did you know how the Philippines stepped up as a nation during World War II and became a sanctuary for the oppressed? what exactly is the disease known as “Philippinitis”?

every story is beautifully told, all while tying the past to the wider tapestry of world history today and how it affects us even now. to quote a line from the book, “the epic sweep of time must ultimately come home”.
