Many children who grew up in the '80s and '90s know what it feels like to be part of the "sandwich generation" caught between building a future for themselves while carrying responsibilities that were never theirs to begin with. Some grew up paying off debts they didn't create. Some became the emotional support system for parents who refused to change. Others put their own dreams on hold because of gambling, poor financial decisions, or years of irresponsibility they had no control over. No child should have to carry burdens they didn't create.
Children are never born to suffer. They are never born to become an ATM, a retirement plan, or the solution to their parents' mistakes. They didn't ask to be here. We made that choice. The moment we chose to bring a child into this world, we accepted the responsibility to provide, protect, love, and prepare them for life (even when they grown to becoming adults)
I never want my daughter to grow up feeling like she owes me for raising her. Feeding her, loving her, educating her, and protecting her are not favours. They are the responsibilities I accepted the day I became her parent.
If one day she chooses to take care of me, I hope it's because of love, not guilt. Because she wants to, not because she feels obligated.
There's only one thing I truly want for my daughter's future:
Freedom.
Freedom to choose the life she wants.
Freedom to chase her dreams without carrying anyone else's burdens.
Freedom to make decisions based on joy, not obligation.
Freedom to walk away from what no longer serves her.
Freedom to love, to explore, to fail, to learn, and to become whoever she wants to be. I don't want her to spend her life fixing mine. If I can give her that kind of freedom, then I know I've succeeded as a parent.
Because to me, the greatest inheritance is a life where your children are free to live for themselves.
