I shared on my personal page about a customer wanting to trade in her piano for a Kawai and found her piano to be an old Yamaha with 5 digit serial number dating back to 1934 before the Second World War.
She text back recently and said some dealer offered to trade in her piano for another one that is within her budget.
For myself I don’t think I will be able to tell my buyer with a straight face the age of the piano ( even though it is restored)

I just tuned a piano recently and was given a booklet entitled ‘ A Piano from Hiroshima’ written by Kasuko Sashida.
The piano survived the Atomic bomb
The piano belonged to a girl who lived in Senda-machi Hiroshima city about 1.8 km from ground zero.
The Yamaha piano survived with scratches from being forced into a wall
Mitsunori Yagawa encountered the piano in July 2005 and refurbished and restored the discarded piano.
It is currently used in more than 200 ‘Peace’ concerts all over Japan

What is happening ? Are today’s young ones no longer interested to take up piano lessons ?
While I was with the family having lunch at UE square
The restaurant we were going to is next to a Music School and a Tae Kwon Do dojo.
The dojo was a hive of activity with the next batch of trainees outside dressing up or just waiting their turn for training. But the music school only has 2 or 3 student coming in .
Both the dojo and the Japanese restaurant was doing well and packed.
Seems like after the pandemic we hear less musical or classical performances and competition or is the academic education is still too stressful for our kids?

It seems that there is a gradual shift in the used piano market from my own observation.

The Japan used refurbished piano that are imported into Singapore started around the 80s to 90s. These pianos lasted for quite while and are durable enough even with the high humidity here.
Most customers are quite happy with it but in recent days where most new homes are much smaller, an unused ( after their child quit playing or stop learning) piano can take up precious space.
Chinese migrant or expat that stays in rented houses tend to move more often will also sell off their pianos before moving out and as a result there are more used pianos resold back either to their respective dealer or the open piano market platform on the net.

One have to be very careful when purchasing direct from private sellers especially when it comes to the interior condition of the piano. Rusty strings , sticky keys and insect infestation etc just to name a few and whether the piano was regularly tuned and maintained

I received a call from a person who spoke Mandarin a few days ago and he said he was from Hwa Chong Intitution and wanted to buy some pianos for the school.

He called again the next day and put in an order for 3 pianos without coming to assess or test the pianos saying he was too busy and trusted my selection and price.

Usually MOE registered schools would need a quotation for whatever purchase and from registered vendors or suppliers and they will also buy new ones not used ones from us dealers.

Plenty of red flags. Even after he said that the deposit for the purchase will be transferred the next morning as the school’s account dept is already closed for the day.

Long story short . After my friend who once work at Hwa Chong spoke to him and ask some questions that he couldn’t answer like where to deliver the piano in Hwa Chong. He couldn’t answer.

Too many scammers nowadays.
I am posting to warn others
