On Beauty” is a novel that explores the complexities of family dynamics, cultural clashes, and personal identity within a contemporary academic setting. The story centers on the Belsey family, comprised of Howard Belsey, a white English art historian, and his African American wife Kiki, alongside their three children. Their lives intersect with the conservative Kipps family, particularly through the intellectual rivalry between Howard and Monty Kipps, both experts on Rembrandt. As the narrative unfolds, it delves into themes of race, class, and the nuances of relationships, highlighted by the characters’ affairs and moral dilemmas.

The novel is structured around a homage to E.M. Forster’s “Howards End,” echoing themes of friendship and ideological conflict. It features a diverse cast, including students at the fictional Wellington College, who navigate campus politics and personal aspirations. The plot intricately weaves humor with poignant observations about contemporary life, culminating in a powerful commentary on the fragility of human connections. Ultimately, “On Beauty” presents an ambiguous ending, reflecting the characters’ struggles and the absence of redemption amidst their crumbling lives. Smith’s work is noted for its sharp wit and insightful critique of modern society, making it a significant contribution to the literary landscape.

In the Struggle and Service of My People describes the growing up and education of a boy in the Anglo Egyptian Sudan in a missionary dominated environment. This memoir explains the economic political educational policies of the Anglo Egyptian Sudan, dominated by the British, which marginalized the South Sudanese. Through Hilary Paul Logali’s story one can see the awakening up of the South Sudanese to political realities only to find out that they have been railroaded, fait accompli, into a country without their knowledge and consultation. It shows the struggle of the Southerners as the underdogs in the struggle for a breathing space in Sudan with more mature, educated, sophisticated and dominant Northern Sudanese. You can however see how the new and better educated South Sudanese began to articulate Southern aspirations better than their parents.

This political memoir explains the effects of coups and military rule as well as one party systems, which were in the vogue in Africa in those years, resulting in the stifling of democracy. It also demonstrates the scourge and the inimical effect of tribalism as an impediment to political development which is also rampant in many parts of Africa. You also will see the negative effect of political Islam in the country, which eventually drove the Sudan into the bad books of the international community and especially of the United States. Through all this can be seen the character of a person, Hilary Paul Logali, the Southern nationalist who sacrificed his education and career for the sake of the political service he undertook for his people.

Promises charts the joys and tribulations of Ajuna and her fiancé, Kagaba, from warm Kampala to gloomy London. Young, highly skilled, and ambitious, both are caught up in financial hardship in their native Uganda. When Kagaba leaves for the UK as an economic immigrant, Ajuna’s happy, fulfilling relationship is under threat. And in the indifferent UK, Kagaba must battle the cold, and the cold shoulder of London.

Promises exposes the shadow world of illegal immigrants, and the creativity with which people in the legal margins rise to meet an inhumane system. But for both Kagaba and Ajuna, a glimmer of hope comes from unexpected quarters. Populated with an expansive array of vibrant characters, Goretti Kyomuhendo’s novel examines the promises we keep and those we break when relationships are profoundly tested by circumstances and twists of fate.
