B.E.C's Founder, Educator, Author and Poet, Marguerite C. Anderson, while she was studying Literature at Shortwood Teachers' College during 1989-92, was introduced to Edwin Arlington Robinson's poem, "Richard Cory". Anderson recalls that "The message in the poem never left her. The poem was a haunting reminder of the hidden struggles that individuals may carry-a struggle that sometimes reduces man to such powerlessness that death is a viable escape."

Anderson added that she always felt the need to know what the character, Richard Cory was going through before he took his life. In her new poem, "Ricard Cory's Lament", she gives voice to Cory. It is the side of the story that readers need to hear.

This is a hallmark of serious contemporary poetry, seen in similar works of poetry from Walcott, Duffy, Atwood and other contemporary postcolonial writers.
