The newly opened is true paradise. Luxe and modern while family friendly and not at all stuffy this resort is perfect for families that want to get away and have everything needed for the kiddos to have a great time, and the adults to feel like they’re actually getting a break.

Our Ocean View Premiere rooms were ideal for our family as they had a small private garden that walked out directly onto the pool deck. Our kids loved the play tents the staff had set up and we enjoyed drinks in our garden in the evenings.

The three pools are all fabulous and provide lots of space for guests. A dedicated “Adults Only” pool is nearest to the beach and has the quiet vibe you’d expect. The main pool and kids pool are side by side so parents can keep a watchful eye while the kiddos use the slide and play. The Cobalt bar is poolside here as well and the 2 for 1 Happy Hour Drinks are the perfect end to pool time each day!

There is also a large outdoor playground and a fully staffed kids club for 4-12 year olds. Ours kids loved spending hours here!!! We loved them spending hours there too 😉

Exceptional seems to be the best word to describe the - truly exceptional! The room, the gardens, the pool, the kids club, the beach, the activities, the breakfasts, the staff… all exceptional.

We had 2 connecting Deluxe Garden Villas and they were incredible. The bathrooms were the largest bathrooms we’ve ever seen in a hotel, anywhere in the world! We loved our location in the resort as we were just steps to the pool, playground and kids club and about a 45 second walk to the beach. For our family it was ideal.

All activities are included at the Santiburi Samui resort which is so great (including all the activities for kids). While we were there we did tennis lessons, sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, candle making and batik painting. They even do free babysitting on Thursday nights for families with kids… like seriously… how great is that?!

The property has a wide range of accommodations and is spacious enough that if you’re travelling as a couple and want a kid free experience, you can still very much enjoy everything without having to “enjoy” the presence of other people’s kids! That said this is a fantastic family-friendly resort that we highly recommend!

Exceptional is the word that comes to mind when describing the resort. For families and couples alike, this resort is wonderful.

Sitting on beautiful Chaweng Noi beach, it’s quiet and away from the kitch of Chaweng. The gorgeous freeform pool has been built into the natural rocks and is nestled into the sand on one side. Two restaurants and the kids club sit around the pool making this area the hub of the resort.

Complimentary ice cream for the kids from 1pm - 3pm everyday made our little humans exceptionally happy! Buy 1 get 1 Happy Hour and an extensive kids menu meant that lazy afternoons seamlessly turned into relaxed evenings.

We stayed in adjoining Deluxe Seaview Rooms and there was ample room for all of us (3 adults and 4 kids this trip!).

Lots on offer as well if you want to some of Samui. We so enjoyed our trip to where we learned all about what is required to rescue these beautiful animals.

Yesterday Thailand celebrated Loy Krathong (ลอยกระทง) where millions of people set out and float (loy) traditional vessels (krathongs) on waterways.

With roots tracing back to India, this festival happens during the full moon of the 12th lunar month and celebrates the water goddess (Phra Mae Khongkha - พระแม่คงคา). As you float your krathong, you place on it the negative aspects of your life and then say "bye".

In 2018, Bangkok city workers pulled 841,327 krathongs from waterways. With an increasing awareness of the environmental impact, krathongs are being fashioned from biodegradable materials such as banana trunks for the base and leaves and flowers for decoration. Some even use bread as the boat to ensure their krathongs become fish food!

The Grand Palace (or in Thai - พระบรมมหาราชวัง pronounced Phra Borom Maha Ratcha Wang) is often brimming with tourists so we tend to bypass this royal complex and explore nearby Wat Pho. BUT along came COVID and the throngs of tourists are nowhere to be found...yet!

The palace is open again and if you’ve never gone (or you went while shoulder to shoulder with strangers), then now is the time to see the palace like few others have seen it - without the crowds! As Thailand takes steps towards reopening to international tourism, there are still unique experiences for those of us already here.

If you’re in town, don’t let the opportunity slip away!

Are we always dreaming of something else? Always wanting the thing that is next?

When it’s hot, we talk about cold. When it’s cold, we research beach vacations.

With “cool season” making itself known in Thailand (though rainy season certainly is holding on as long as it can), we catch ourselves talking about the snowflakes falling in Canada. With Christmas tunes filling the air in shopping malls, we can’t help but think of winter wonderlands - those would be pines and not palms.

We used to live in Poland and even for our Canadian blood, the weather was brisk! Winters lasted so long. Once while visiting Gdańsk (our favourite Polilsh city) for Easter, we saw people building snow-bunnies instead of snowmen. It was comical and depressing all at the same time. Somehow, snow creations in April lack the charm that December snow fun inherently possesses.

Top 5 Family Beaches in Thailand - We’ve seen a lot of beaches through our years here in Thailand and here’s a roundup of our favourite beaches for families.
1.Bang Tao Beach, Phuket - stretching for 8km on Phuket’s west coast, Bang Tao Beach is family paradise perfection. With multiple family friendly resorts including the .lagunaphuket where we stayed (and loved!) there is no shortage of great accommodations for all budgets. The town of Bang Tao has excellent grocery stores and restaurants, so meals are easy. The beach itself is gorgeous white sand with clear blue waters. The surf varies greatly depending on time of year but whenever we’ve been there it’s been very kind to swimmers and we’ve felt comfortable having our kids in the water.
2. Coral Cove, Koh Samui - this little gem is found on the east coast of Koh Samui, north of Lamai Beach. Dotted with just a few hotels, this quiet paradise can be accessed through the Coral Cove Bungalows. There is softer sand found on other beaches but there is just something about this quiet bay that we so enjoyed. The large boulders make for interesting exploring for kids and some easy snorkelling right off the beach.
3.Khao Takiab, Hua Hin - the beaches on either side of Khao Takiab (Chopstick Mountain) in Hua Hin are some of our favourite. With easy access from many different small roads, it’s the perfect day trip. The beach is wide and long here and full of interesting shells. The sea is very shallow and so kids can explore very far out without it getting more than waist deep. The fishermen’s boats, monkeys on Khao Takiab, ice cream shops and beach restaurants all make this one of our favourite spots that is easily reached from Bangkok in a couple of hours. If you’re wanting a slower pace, the beach south of Khao Takiab is for you.

Travel has always been driven by rapid change. Travel technology, popular destinations, government policies, and responsible travel best practices are seemingly in an endless state of evolution. Then the pandemic came along and abruptly changed how (and if) we travel.

As Thailand looks to re-open to some tourists after almost 2 years of the travel taps turned off, we've been talking a lot about the changes we've seen and some that we are expecting. Whenever we project forward, we tend to look back to see just how far we've come!

This picture, originally taken on film (remember those days?), is of Guangzhou's Pai Yuen Airport just weeks before it was replaced by Baiyun International Airport in August of 2004. We were flying a local airline and making our way south to Haikou. The bus that took us to our aircraft drove behind the planes and each one rocked us with a little blast from the engines.

In 2019, Baiyun was the 3rd busiest airport in the world for passenger traffic - 65.8 million passengers walked those halls. Last year, with COVID changing the game, it was the busiest airport in the world with 43.8 million passengers! If you would have asked us our global ranking of Pai Yuen back in 2004, we would have never dreamed this airport in Canton would hold such worldwide acclaim...but travel is forever changing.
