Critical Content Areas by Grade Level
The curriculum prioritises specific domains to ensure students develop a deep understanding of mathematical foundations:
• Kindergarten: Focuses on representing and operating on whole numbers and describing shapes and space.
• Grade 1: Concentrates on addition and subtraction within 20, whole number relationships (place value), linear measurement, and reasoning about geometric shapes.
• Grade 2: Extends understanding of the base-ten system, builds fluency with addition and subtraction, and introduces standard units of measure.
• Grade 3: Introduces multiplication and division, the structure of rectangular arrays, area, and an initial understanding of fractions.
• Grade 4: Develops fluency with multi-digit multiplication and division, fraction equivalence, and the classification of geometric figures based on properties like symmetry.
• Grade 5: Focuses on fluency with fraction operations (including unlike denominators), integrating decimals into the place value system, and understanding volume.
• Grade 6: Shifts toward ratio and rate reasoning, completing the system of rational numbers (including negative numbers), and writing/interpreting expressions and equations.
• Grade 7: Emphasises proportional relationships, operations with rational numbers, and drawing inferences about populations based on samples.
• Grade 8: Prioritises linear equations and systems of equations, the concept of functions, and the Pythagorean Theorem
