On this day in 1978, the Meat Loaf single “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad” debuted on the UK Singles Chart at #48 (August 19)

The signature Meat Loaf power ballad was another Jim Steinman special from the classic “Bat out of Hell” LP, and was Steinman’s attempt to write a “more simple, less complicated” song (as opposed to his usual epics).

In a 2003 interview for the VH1 Ultimate Albums series, Steinman recalled:

“I remember Mimi Kennedy [a cast member of Jim's then-current musical Rhinegold] telling me, she said, you know, when I was probably complaining why no one liked my stuff and couldn't get a deal, she says, 'Well Steiny, your stuff is so complicated.
Can't you write something simple?'

And while she was saying that the oldies station was on the radio and it was playing that old Elvis song, 'I Want You, I Need,' whatever it was. 'I Want You, I Need You, I Love You', you know.

I just started singing my own song but it was 'I Want You, I Need You, I Love You.'
She said, 'Why don't you write something simple like that, "I want you, I need you, I love you"?'
I said, 'Well I'll try.'
I don't try to make them complicated.

I remember going home and I tried so hard but the best I could do was: 'I want you, I need you but there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you, don't be sad, 'cause two out of three ain't bad'.
So it was still a twist but it was my closest to a simple song, and one Elvis could have done.”

The song went to #5 in Canada, #9 in New Zealand, #11 in Australia, and spent 23 weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100, also peaking at #11.

In Ireland the single got to #25, and peaked at #32 in the UK.

On This Day in 1973, Lynyrd Skynyrd Released (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)

On August 13, 1973, Lynyrd Skynyrd released their debut studio album, (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd), introducing the world to a band that would become synonymous with Southern rock. Produced by Al Kooper, the record captured the raw power, blues roots, and triple-guitar identity that defined the Jacksonville group.

The album delivered an extraordinary collection of songs, including "Tuesday's Gone," "Gimme Three Steps," "Simple Man," and the monumental "Free Bird." Ronnie Van Zant's storytelling and commanding vocals combined with Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, and Ed King's guitars to create a sound that was immediately distinctive.

The album eventually became one of the cornerstones of 1970s American rock. More than half a century later, (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) remains an essential Southern rock record and the beginning of Lynyrd Skynyrd's legendary recording career.
