hey flower friends 🥹🌷 can we talk about something that’s been weighing on my heart lately?
I think we can all agree that LIFE IS EXPENSIVE right now. Groceries, gas, bills… literally everything. And unfortunately, flowers are no exception. 💔
I wanted to share a little behind the scenes of what’s been happening in the flower world, because I know you’ve probably noticed some changes, too.
Last year, I was paying around $2.25 for ONE mini calla lily stem. This year, they’re $5. That’s a 122% increase. I’m currently paying $2.49 per rose stem compared to 2024’s $1.15 a stem, and that’s before I even begin to put together a bouquet.
So WHY have flowers gotten so expensive? A huge portion of the flowers sold in the U.S. are imported, especially from Colombia and Ecuador. Between rising labor and growing costs, import tariffs, and the expense of getting fresh flowers here by air, refrigerated trucks, and cold storage, the costs add up before the flowers even reach my hands. And just like everything else, the cost of getting those flowers to you doesn’t stop there. 🥲
And here’s the kicker, flowers usually have to be purchased in bunches or in bulk, often 10–25 stems at a time. So when one stem costs more, I’m not just paying a couple extra dollars. I’m paying significantly more just to get the flowers in the door.
Then there’s all the behind-the-scenes stuff that isn’t always thought about: water, floral supplies, wrapping paper, ink, gas, subscriptions, website, marketing, Pos system, vendor fees, taxes and licensing, and paying my sweet assistants who help make everything happen. All those little expenses add up FAST. That’s the reality of running a small business, and it’s a lot more than just the cost of the flowers themselves.
This is a big reason you’ve seen fewer pop-ups lately. I know nobody wants to pay $6 for a single stem of a flower, and honestly, I don’t blame you! I’ve been doing everything I can to keep my prices as affordable as possible without sacrificing the quality and experience I want to give you. But sometimes the numbers just don’t work the way I wish they would.
This is also why we’ve been trying so hard to connect with more local flower farmers! 🌷 We would LOVE to support more local growers and source more blooms close to home whenever possible. So if you know a local flower farmer, PLEASE pass my info along to them, or send me their info! I’d love to connect and see how we can work together. 💗
And please know, this isn’t me complaining or trying to make anyone feel bad for not purchasing flowers. I know we’re all doing our best to make our money stretch, and I understand that flowers are a luxury, not a necessity. I just want my loyal customers and flower friends to understand what’s happening on the other side of the flower bar, too.
I LOVE what I do. I love seeing you pick out your blooms, build your bouquets, and support my little business. I don’t want rising costs to take away from any of that, and I’m constantly trying to find ways to keep things fun, accessible, and sustainable.
So if you see your favorite florist looking a little tired lately, give them a hug. 🥹 We’re out here trying to keep the flowers blooming while everything else keeps getting more expensive, too.
