Favorite Workshop Upgrade

Systainers have pretty much become a standard inclusion with nicer tool purchases which inevitably leads to stacks of them in the workshop. We’ve tried a few different diy storage methods but nothing comes close to the SYS-AZ drawers from Systainer USA . They really are the perfect solution and are easy to install in custom storage racks, shelf’s, or cabinets like we made, or they offer a number of prefab options. Plus you can buy empty systainers and customize them to fit anything you can think of!

Batching out spindle profile samples to help a customer decide on what they like is already a time killer, add in having to stop mid flow to sharpen the roughing gouge and it really grinds to a halt. But now that we have the T-8 from we can bring back a perfect edge in a flash and keep on rolling! Of all the things we like about the T-8, the ability to true a blade edge so quickly that it doesn’t break the work flow is what we love the most!!

The Hype Is Real

Three months into using my new Ekasand 6” RO sander from Uneeda and I’m am really happy with the results. It can handle the heavier work with lower grits and aggressively knock down high spots, while still being able to take care of finish sanding with the higher grits. My only regret is not making the switch sooner!

Screws Are Not The Enemy

Woodworking purist love to say screws don’t belong in fine furniture…and I say that’s bull$%!+. Anytime that argument comes up just remind them of the Maloof joint 😂. Besides, cherry and maple go together like peas and carrots, and a classic way to combine them is with contrasting wood plugs in countersink holes.

Easy Tight Miters Every Time

All it takes is some plywood scraps and a quality hand saw to get perfect miters every time when doing fine trim work. I used to use a a 7.25” miter saw but now that I have this Dozuki Pull Saw from , the miter saw is just collecting dust. These really are the best eastern hand saws on the market and the level of precision they produce is unrivaled. Not to mention the fact that they’re 1/3 the cost of a small miter saw!

Cuts Like Butter

Sharpening edge tools can be hard for anyone, but it’s especially difficult for those with grip and dexterity issues like me. I’ve tried multiple sharpening jigs and guides over the years but nothing comes close to how easy and foolproof the T-8 system from is. They’ve streamlined the whole process and all but eliminated the guesswork of finding the correct angle. I can honestly say this is going to be an essential part of helping me get back into traditional hand tool work and I couldn’t be more excited! And you know they mean business when band-aids are included.

What’s Your Angle?

One of the trickiest parts of making traditional chairs is getting the angles right. There are multiple ways to help accomplish this, but this angle drilling jig from Dustin Penner is by far the easiest to use. Especially when you’re batching out a large chair order.
