Day 2 Haleakalā sunset and moonrise. The weather blows through and changes every few minutes. It was cloudy and windy and sunny and rainy all in 30 minutes. Mountain summits are wild. It’s hard to believe that morning we were baking on a golden sandy beach, then freezing in a dessert at night.

We made it through May, the end of another school year and blasted into summer with a road trip to Virginia. We’re so blessed to have so many wonderful people in our “village”.

Our summer was jam packed, memorable and exhausting. We planned to head to Maine to build a sauna and decided to make a trip of it and stop in Virginia Beach to see my brother and his family, DC for 30 hours to squeeze in the national Mall, Smithsonian and White House, Maine to see family and spend the 4th of July, New York City for a show + pizza and of course Kentucky on the way home. In reality it was joy and a hot mess but the kids only seem to remember the joy. Lesson learned. 🩷

Recently read these words on the Statue of Liberty and they pull on my Heart strings as an American. To know that about 40% of us can trace our lineage back to Ellis Island and most of us to immigrants who came in other ways - and are losing our compassion for this process and for these people. In Corrie Ten Booms book The Hiding place she asks her older brother what things are like at his university in Germany and what he’s seeing as the N**i party rises to power. She reads part of his thesis… “ the seeds were being planted of a contempt for human life such as the world had never seen.” We cannot allow our language to paint entire groups of people with dehumanizing language. We cannot allow or ever forget the value of a human life or think that an American life is somehow worth more than the lives of other humans. 🌍 🤍

More updates. Thomas also volunteered to coach Annabell’s soccer team for 2 seasons and was glad he did it but not sure he’ll do it again 😂. Our trip to Georgia to visit my Aunt on a plantation was our first horseback hunting experience and it turns out I love building art legos. More traveling but mostly normal stuff at home with friends. The hotter it gets the more we find ourselves indoors, so we try to get as much out of Spring as we can.

The update. We ended 2024 with a little bit of travel and a lot of time with family and friends. We became baseball people for a bit and loved it! Got to see parts of North America I’d never seen which was such a treat. We spent Christmas in Utah, embracing the love of our family and the pain of loss.

I had an interaction with a kid at a coffee shop who isn’t voting today but said that if he was, he’d vote for DT. And then asked me who I had voted for. After I told him I voted for KH, we had a great interaction about our common good. I realized that all of us have our priorities. Usually those priorities are dictated by our life experiences: what’s important to us is usually what affects us the most, which is natural and understandable. It’s also a privilege, to not have to consider that what others are going through might be worse than what you are going through. You might worry about losing your job, while someone else is worried about finding a place to live or surviving child birth. I left that interaction with smiles, a fist bump, and a general sense that as Americans, we have the power to be better than who we vote to lead us. That is what will heal and save our country - we must individually have more love, more compassion, and more understanding than anyone who leads us. Then our fate, is in our hands. “Be curious, not judgmental” or we risk missing information we have yet to learn through our own experience. This is empathy. ❤️🇺🇸 BTW this is my niece… isn’t she the cutest??!

We left a small part of our hearts in New Zealand last year. 🇳🇿 To say it is special is an understatement. It *feels* like no where else we’ve been - 10/10 would recommend.
