America started here.

Not just in 1776, right here on Richmond Highway, where history has been unfolding for 250 years and counting.

This is Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House, a National Historic Landmark on Richmond Highway that was once part of George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. Washington gifted the land to his step-granddaughter, Nelly Custis, and her husband in 1799 — and in the centuries since, it's remained one of the most storied places in the region.

That's the kind of layered, real history that runs through this whole corridor, and it's exactly what Faces of ONE is here to celebrate as we mark America's 250th.

History is still making headlines.

More than 200 years after it first ran, George Washington's distillery at George Washington's Mount Vernon is capturing national attention again — featured this week in The New York Times, timed to the distillery's 25th anniversary and America's 250th.

It's a reminder of something we believe about this whole part of Fairfax County: the history here isn't just something you read about. It's part of what makes the area worth visiting today, and it's the same spirit behind Faces of ONE.

We're here to tell the stories of the people, places, and history that make Richmond Highway and the surrounding community worth knowing, now and in the years ahead.

This is Richmond Highway — Route 1, right here in Fairfax County.

One road connecting generations of businesses, neighborhoods, and stories, and now entering one of the biggest transformations in its history. As Fairfax County moves forward with the Embark Richmond Highway plan and the future Richmond Highway Bus Rapid Transit line, this corridor is set to change in a big way over the next several years.

Faces of ONE is a new initiative from the Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation (SFDC), created to make sure the businesses, entrepreneurs, and community members who make this corridor what it is remain visible, connected, and supported throughout that change.

This page is where you'll find their stories — along with the destinations, milestones, and moments that make Richmond Highway worth knowing, today and in the years ahead.
