Featured Art Friday! Paul Watson shares why he creates his life-size skeletal metal and concrete figures:

“‘Reconstruction’ and ‘JR’ were the first life-size pieces I ever made. Each one represented a moment stuck in time that helped me place feelings and work through things I couldn’t quite figure out. I was living in Boston at the time and was inspired by these giant retaining walls that ‘bellied out,’ revealing rebar infrastructure and an impossible weight behind them, shifting slowly through time.

I can’t wait to have a shop space that will allow me to get back to making pieces this size. I have the components for three from over the last few years. As we make progress on our dream of opening a foundry, it feels like a perfect time to bring more of these sculptures to life.”

Not every foundry job is about pouring metal.
Before each pour, we skim impurities from the surface of the molten metal to help produce cleaner, stronger castings.

Featured Art Friday! ⛓️ "Interconnection" by Julie Slattery. This 300 pound chain was originally carved out of foam and then cast in iron using resin sand.

“Interconnection” , coiling in an expansive spiral, is an exploration of the interconnectedness of existence and the perpetual cycle of life. Cast in iron, the chain symbolizes the unbreakable bonds that tie individuals, communities, and the natural world together. The spiral form, echoing the Fibonacci sequence found in nature, signifies growth, evolution, and the cyclical nature of life's experiences. The sheer scale of the piece invites viewers to physically and emotionally engage with the idea of continuity and interdependence.

It is currently on display at Krutch Park in Knoxville until mid September.

Have you ever wondered how we capture every tiny detail in a metal sculpture?

One of our favorite methods is resin sand. By mixing sand with a resin binder, we create incredibly strong molds that can handle molten aluminum, bronze, and even cast iron while reproducing fine textures with amazing accuracy.

Every project is different, so choosing the right molding process is an important part of foundry work. Resin sand gives us the strength and precision needed for larger, more detailed castings—and once the metal cools, we break the mold apart to reveal the finished piece inside.

Most people have never heard of a cupola furnace, but it's one of the oldest and most iconic ways to melt cast iron.

Instead of melting metal in a crucible, a cupola is continuously fed with layers of coke, iron, and limestone while air is blasted through the fuel to create incredibly high temperatures. Once the iron melts, it's tapped from the bottom and carried to waiting molds.

At Molten Made, we love sharing the history and craft behind traditional iron casting. Every pour connects centuries of foundry knowledge with contemporary sculpture and functional art.

✨ Featured Art Friday!

This week's featured piece is one of Paul Watson 's incredible hand lamps and this version is cast in iron.

Each lamp begins with a real hand cast with alginate, then is transformed into metal in the foundry. The result is both functional and sculptural, with the light bulb glowing from the center of the open hand.

It's one of those pieces that always gets people talking.

🔥 Our first bronze pour is officially in the books!

On July 4th, we poured bronze in our backyard. This pour was more than just melting metal, it was a full test of our melt-out kiln, ceramic shell process, and bronze setup. We're happy to report that everything worked beautifully!

The pieces we cast are bronze flowers that will become part of a larger mixed-metal sculpture. Next week, we'll cast the main sculpture in iron during our Cast Iron Workshop at Sculpture Trails in Indiana, bringing both metals together in one finished piece.

It's exciting to see all the months of planning, building, and testing come to life. Thanks for following along as we continue building Molten Made!

Ever wonder why foundries use different metals?

Each one melts at a different temperature, requires different equipment, and has its own unique strengths. Aluminum is lightweight, bronze captures incredible detail, and iron is built to last for generations.

Thank you to all who came out to Community Day yesterday! We had a blast! It's much more fun to pour metal with you all there! This makes us that much more excited to open our brick and mortar. And thank you to everyone who took home some art or a dog paw! Each purchase gets us a little closer to opening our foundry. 💛💛💛
