On Aug. 17, it was noted in the Daily Morning Astorian, that the day before, when sloops, schooners and other racers arrived, "the city began filling with visitors to the regatta, and it is estimated that by the time the last incoming boat had arrived, at least 1,000 strangers were in town … It is safe to say that the standing room crowd will be put out before the regatta is over." "It was a large and orderly crowd from one end of the city to the other …" the paper reported, "(and) thousands of people looked on from the docks and house tops, and boats in mid-stream ..."
