How do you make your stained glass pieces? The steps in stained glass creation are: 1. Find or draw a pattern. 2. Clean and polish.

Trace or paste the pattern pieces onto the glass. 3. Cut out all of the pieces by hand. 4. Grind the edges of each piece of glass smooth. 5. Wrap each piece of glass in adhesive backed copper foil tape. 6. Layout and solder the piece. 7. It is a labor intensive and time consuming process

How do you make your fused glass pieces? 1. Place the glass pieces in the kiln in the appropriate configura

tion. 6. Heart the kiln anywhere from 1100 to 1700 degrees depending on the desired effect. It takes about 12 hours for the kiln to go through a cycle and cool enough to open. How do you color the glass? The color of stained glass comes from the addition of metallic salts during its manufacturing. Art glass as it is sometimes called comes in a huge variety of colors and textures. The metallic glass I use in a lot of my jewelry is called Dichroic glass. Dichroic glass is made by adding layers of precious metals to layers of glass. It is very expensive. What is the difference between art glass and fusible glass? I use art glass for my stained glass pieces. When creating my fused glass pieces I use a specially formatted type of glass so that the different colors will fuse without breaking. Each piece of fusible glass is about twice as expensive as a regular sheet of art glass. Each piece of glass warms and cools at a different speed so if I combine incompatible pieces they will break apart. How do you get the bottles to flatten? Glass has some liquid properties so when heated to 1400 degrees or higher it just slumps down onto the kiln shelf. The higher the temp the flatter it gets. The rounded pieces are slumped into a mold. How long does it take to create a piece of glass art? It depends on the size. I can do a small, simple ornament in 2 hours but it takes weeks for a larger piece. It takes time to do it right. How should I care for my piece of art? I polish each piece so it will only requiring buffing
with a soft dry cloth or spray furniture polish to return it to its original shine. Do NOT use a suction cup to display your artwork. As the temperatures change suction cups will fail. Instead put a cup hook in the top of a window and suspend it with fishing line or chain. Keep them away from small children since all items are created using lead based solder. What is Millefiori? The millefiori technique involves the production of glass canes or rods with multicolored patterns which are viewable only from the cut ends of the cane (from Wikipedia). I buy them precut into small rounds.

Have you ever wondered why stained glass is expensive? I can only speak for myself but this is an example.

This is a Flamingo I make. The glass is an 8 by 8 inch piece of the glass I use. It cost me $38 for the glass because it has been discontinued but is the perfect shade. I can only get three flamingos from it because it is super important that the grain works with the pattern. The other parts (lead solder, wire, copper foil, etc) come to about $3 each. It takes me three hours to make one. I have to pay myself because this is my job. I only pay myself $10/hour because this is a side gig, but the industry standard calls for higher.

So: Glass, etc $15.60 + $30 (labor) = 45.60

This is just an example. A lot of the things I make aren't as complicated and cost less. I can offer things cheaper on my FB page because Amazon charges fees.

These are the two different styles/sizes of dragons I have done so far. The flying dragon measures 10.5" by 5" and is made of purple and aqua glasses. It is $50.
The smaller Dragon Head measures 6.25 by 3.25" and is made from cobalt blue and grape purple glasses. It is $45.
Both are made from translucent glasses so they will look fantastic in a window and will throw cool colors all around the room.
