I’m closing the doors to Harvest Moon Worm Ranch.
I am offering it for sale.
Including all stock, bins, and equipment.
I have been doing inventory the last few days. I have thousands of crawlers in different stages of life.
715 Adult Breeders
Over 4500 Crawlers from hatching to pre adult
Over 3100 unhatched Cocoons.
I say at this point in time because it changes every day.
Breeders keep breeding and making more cocoons
Cocoons hatch every day into hatchlings.
Hatchlings and pre adults keep growing into breeders and so on.
The life cycle time line is this.
2 crawlers lock up for 12-18 hours.
In 1-2 days the very beginning of the cocoon starts forming.
3-6 days the cocoon forms and is free from the crawler
21-28 days the cocoon hatches
3-4 months the crawler is a breeding adult.
By the way. After lock up, both crawlers produce a cocoon.
A crawler will produce a cocoon every 7-10 days.
I keep a breeder bin at about 600 crawlers. That seems to be the sweet spot to produce the most cocoons. 300-400 they don’t mingle enough. Too many and they won’t breed at all because they know the population is too high for them all to survive.
I harvest the castings and cocoons from the breeder bins every 3-4 weeks.
I make a new bed of peat moss and sheaded cardboard. And grit. Then transfer the crawlers into the new bin. I always did this by hand as I didn’t want to risk injury by sifting.
I feed each breeder bin 1/4 cup of my homemade worm chow every 2-3 days. When they have ate it all.
It’s really cheap to feed them.
It’s been really fun and really interesting raising them but I’m moving on to other interests and need the room they are set up in.
Contact me if you’re interested.
It’s a cool side gig. Many different roads you can take doing this.
