The situation of more than 180 active wildfires in Canada, resulting in the smoke pouring into the U.S. and the region, can now be found on an interactive map. Google for “Canadian wildfire interactive map” and it pops right up. This looks significantly worse than two summers ago. In 2024, we were told it would take the rest of summer into fall to die down.

In case you’re wondering about my love of football. (Soccer), look no further than this photograph of my father in goal for England in 1947. This is one of a group of press photos from a Paris newspaper I am blessed to have received from my Auntie Jen (Washington, England). On the left, tightly curled around the ball in the striped jumper. That’s Donald Maddison. He was 20 years old, and World War II was underway.
For the past few weeks, I have been working on a new manuscript, journeying through his young life. Trying to sort out what little he talked about. Considering why it was strictly off limits to bring up the past. Trying to meet and get to know him. It has been a surprisingly emotional journey, already.
