I feel like a butterfly every time I’m here but I actually took this picture for two reasons.
ONE • Breast cancer has become way too personal in my life. And if sharing this reminds even one person to schedule the appointment they’ve been putting off, then I’m glad I shared it.
For me, I’m considered high risk. I have the BARD1 gene and a fibroadenoma in my left breast. My grandmother passed from breast cancer at age 57. My mom was diagnosed two years ago at 54.
So every 6 months, I’m back for screening - MRIs, ultrasounds, and starting this year mammograms too.
I’ll go months just living my normal life… being a mom, running my business, worrying about a million completely ordinary things and then suddenly it’s time for another scan.
I stay pretty positive because I know I’m being followed closely, but that little “what if this is the one where they find something” thought still creeps in.
Today, I left feeling really good though and reminded of how much the right doctor can change the way these appointments feel.
TWO • The right doctor matters.
Today I met my third breast doctor in a year and somehow ended up with the best one yet. She listened, took my risks and concerns seriously, and made me feel like a person, not a percentage on a chart.
Honestly, I left wishing she could be my doctor for literally everything.
So this is also a reminder to find doctors who listen. Ask questions. Advocate for yourself. And please don’t put off your appointments.
As moms, we’re SO good at taking care of everyone else while convincing ourselves that we can wait. But it can’t always wait.
Taking care of our kids means taking care of ourselves too.
So this is a reminder to swipe out of Instagram and schedule the appointment.
The breast exam.
The mammogram.
The follow-up.
Whatever it is.
Go schedule it. 🫶🏼
