From the bottom of our hearts, thank you! Yesterday’s Bellingham Dahlia Festival blew us away. The attendance was far greater than we ever could have expected. Thank you for supporting our local vendors, having lunch with Juanita's and jamming with Silent Cowboy Band.
Our u-pick was more popular than we anticipated. Within the first hour the u-pick field had been cut. We had to close u-pick tickets, because there simply wasn’t anything left. When we recommended showing up early, you really did! We are sorry to those who wanted to u-pick and were unable to. We are planning a larger u-pick field and prepaid tickets next year so folks can plan their day. Thanks for growing along side us in this first year. We learned a lot and also felt the love of this amazing community we get to be a part of.

The cell biologist in me could take us down quite the rabbit hole, but let’s break it down in a way that actually makes sense. A chimera contains two or more genetically distinct types of cells growing side-by-side. This occurs due to a spontaneous genetic mutation often triggered by transposons(jumping genes) that alter pigment production in specific tissue layers. For this one, the expression in half the cells is orange and the other pink giving a 50/50 appearance to the flower.

Dahlias have 8 sets of chromosomes unlike humans that have 2 sets. This makes their genetics more complex with greater instability. It’s random and not likely reproducible so we enjoy these little treasures whenever they appear.

Inspections aren’t scary they are a chance to learn and meet your WA Dept of Agriculture staff. If you sell dahlia tubers(totally >$100) in the state of WA this is a requirement. This year was the final year for our county inspector, Kay. She is headed for retirement and had a wonderful handoff to our new Whatcom Co inspector, Wes. I have developed a great relationship with Kay and she has taught me so much over the past 7 yrs. I’ve had the opportunity to ask questions, solve disease mysteries and she has watched my farm grow. I would encourage anyone selling tubers to have your inspection and take a chance to learn something new. With the dahlia craze the state has seen a lot more viral disease and spread in plants. Make sure you purchase from those who comply with inspections.

We need help settling this debate. Marigolds have gained back some popularity the last few seasons, but they come with a price, smell. In a mixed bouquet some find the smell too unpleasant while others enjoy the fragrance. Do you enjoy them or pass because they stink?
