Cuckoo bees lay their eggs in the nests of other bee species and let the host raise their young.

Like their bird namesake, cuckoo bees are kleptoparasites. The female sneaks into a host nest, lays her egg, and leaves. Her larva often hatches first and destroys the host's egg before consuming the stored food.

Nature invented identity theft. Cuckoo bees were first. 🥚🐝

Bees sense electrical fields — and flowers use electricity to signal freshness.

Flying builds a positive charge on bees. Flowers carry a slight negative charge — bees can read a flower's freshness before even landing.

Queen Bees: The mother of the hive typically lives for 2 to 3 years (though some can reach up to 5 years). Since she is continuously fed royal jelly and never leaves the hive (except for mating), she outlives all other members.

Worker Bees (Summer): These females make up the vast majority of the colony. During the active spring and summer months, they literally "work themselves to death," living only 5 to 6 weeks due to the strenuous, physical demands of foraging.

Worker Bees (Winter): Bees born in the fall undergo physical changes, developing larger fat reserves to survive the cold. These "winter bees" can live anywhere from 5 to 6 months.

Drone Bees: These are the male bees in the colony, and their sole purpose is to mate with the queen. If a drone successfully mates, he dies immediately. If he does not mate by the end of the active summer season, the worker bees will typically eject him from the hive, where he will die of cold or starvation.

A world without pollinators would drastically change our diets and ecosystems. While staple grains like wheat and rice rely on wind, over 80% of flowering plants and 35% of global crop production (including most fruits, vegetables, coffee, and nuts) depend on them. Grocery store produce sections would shrink by about half.

Many grazing plants for livestock—such as alfalfa and clover—rely heavily on bee pollination. A decline in these crops would severely affect livestock, disrupting the meat and dairy industries.

Over 80% of the world's flowering plants need pollinators to reproduce. Without them, these plants would disappear. This would cause a chain reaction, as these plants and their seeds provide food and shelter for an estimated 25% of all birds and countless mammals.
