Janmashtami ki Badhai. Nand Mahotsav ki Badhai.

There are two Pichhwais in the Nathdwara tradition that carry the complete story of these sacred days — and most people have only ever seen one of them.

The Janmashtami Pichhwai. Shriji adorns the dyed jamdani cloth with kesar and ruperi kinari — saffron and silver at the border. He wears the kuleh. The biggest jod of mor pankh of the entire year. And the heaviest shringar he will wear on any day — navratn Jadav abharans, the complete Jadav saaj, the Jadav chokhat. Everything about this shringar says: tonight is unlike any other night. Because it is.

The Nand Mahotsav Pichhwai. The morning after. Yashodaji and Nand Baba swing the palna as all of Braj watches. The Brajwasis are throwing dudh, dahi, haldi paste on each other — dancing, weeping from joy, celebrating that a son has been born in Gokul. This Pichhwai adorns Shriji from the day after Janmashtami — and stays, carrying the joy of Braj forward, all the way until Radhashtami.

Two Pichhwais. Two moments. The sacred weight of midnight and the pure joy of morning — both preserved in cloth and pigment and gold, as they have been in Nathdwara for over 350 years.

My father did not give me money when I completed my first painting. He placed an old sketchbook in my hands — filled with Shrinathji's Shringar Pranali and Pichhwai sketches drawn by our ancestors.
That book is still with me. I paint from it today.

The Sharma family of Nathdwara — Adi Gaur Brahmins — came with Shrinathji from Vraj. For over 350 years, we have painted for his seva. Not as a profession. As a purpose we were born into.

My ancestors painted directly for Tilkayat Shri — Khemraj ji, Bhimraj ji, Kanhaiyalal ji, Bhuralal ji, Manaklal ji, Radhakrishna ji, Bhagwandas ji, and many more whose names the world never recorded but whose brushstrokes are still alive in the tradition. The same pigments. The same prayers before beginning. The same understanding that a Pichhwai is not made — it is offered.

When I open that sketchbook and begin a new painting, I am not just working on cloth. I am completing a gesture my family has made for eleven generations. Every piece that leaves this studio carries that weight — the seva, the lineage, the history in every layer of colour.

My family works together on each Pichhwai. And every painting that reaches you has been touched only by our hands.

Things you need to know about an authentic Pichwai . Here is every reason why.

An authentic Pichhwai begins before the brush. With pigments mixed by hand — safeda, pyavdi, nil, burnt sienna. Not from a tube. Ground, tested, and adjusted by an artist who knows what each colour should feel like between the fingers before it touches cloth.

The cloth is starched with wheat paste. The composition is drawn by hand — the tipaan — in a figure vocabulary that has been passed from artist to artist in Nathdwara for over 350 years. No tracing. No transfer. Only the hand, and what the hand has been taught.

Then comes the ghota. The agate stone worked across the back of the cloth after painting. It presses the threads flat. It creates a surface that makes colour glow from within. Hold an original Nathdwara Pichhwai in the light and watch it. It breathes. A print sits there.

Nathdwara shaili is identified by three things: the sakhi faces, the figure tipaan, and the scenery. These are not stylistic choices — they are the visual language of three centuries of sewa.

Before you buy any Pichhwai — ask what pigments were used. Ask who drew the tipaan. Ask to see the ghota burnish in the light.

If they cannot answer, you know what you are holding.

Look at the sky in this Pichhwai. Now tell me what time it is.

The Daan leela — dawn. Thakurji and the gwal mandli stopping the gopis at sunrise, playfully looting the dan. The sky is rose and gold. And Giriraj Ji in the background? Blue — because the mountain reflects the early morning sky. The artists knew this because they climbed to their rooftops before sunrise and studied it.

The Gaucharan, the Vyahula — evening. The sky turns amber. The cows return home. Giriraj Ji shifts to brown and warm earth tones. Same mountain. Different hour. The artist changed the colour because the light changed.

Raas Mandala — midnight. Deep indigo, almost black. The moon placed with care. Stars. And in the storm Hindola leelas — heavy clouds, lightning, the wild romantic bhav of the monsoon.

And if you look all the way up in the sky of any major Pichhwai — the vimanas. Shri Vishnu, Mahadevji, Brahmaji, Indra, Naradji — all raining flowers down on Thakurji's leela from their flying chariots. Witnesses from above. Even the gods could not stay away.

Adhik Maas begins on 17 May — and with it, the most seva-filled month in Pushtimarg.

Every day of Purushottam Maas, Thakurji accepts a manorath — a divine wish, offered through the complete devotion of Vaishnavs. The manoraths were first given by the grace and aagya of the Goswami balaks, who saw Thakurji's leelas directly and gave them to us through their kirtans. What they described in verse, the artists of Nathdwara have been painting on cloth for centuries.

For every manorath, two Pichhwais are created — one placed behind Thakurji during the seva, to give him the atmosphere of his leela. And one painted after — an exact record of that divine darshan, preserved in pigment so the moment of grace is never lost.

Because this Adhik Maas falls in summer, the great manoraths are of shade and water: Kunj, Girikandra, Naav Manorath, and Kamal Talai.

These are the Pichhwais we are currently taking orders for. Made entirely by hand, rooted in the bhavna of the kirtans, painted as an act of seva — as they have always been.

Adhik Maas is rare. It comes once every two to three years. If you have wanted a Manorath Pichhwai for your home mandir, this is the time.
