Are you ready? PCCA's 4th annual Halloween Exhibition, Haunted, opens in 1 week here at PCCA. 🎃

Haunted showcases the work of 56 Michigan artists, highlighting the best of the autumnal season and a favorite holiday. Join us Friday, October 2 from 5-8 for the opening reception.

Brief announcements and prizes will be announced at 6PM. The exhibition is free to attend, though please note due to the historic nature of our building, the gallery is only accessibly via staircase.

One week past and my painting is finally ready to leave the easel! Meet the striking Egyptian Vulture.

Vultures are often deeply misunderstood, but they are the literal MVPs of our planet's ecosystems. Here is why these birds deserve our absolute respect:

🚨 The Eco-Guardians: Vultures possess incredibly powerful, highly acidic digestive systems that naturally neutralize lethal bacteria like anthrax, rabies, and botulism when they consume carrion. By picking landscapes clean, they stop catastrophic disease outbreaks from spreading to wildlife, livestock, and humans!

🪨 The Rock Stars: Egyptian Vultures are one of the only birds on earth smart enough to use tools! They pick up sharp stones with their beaks and hurl them at thick ostrich eggs to crack them open for a snack.

💄 Natural Makeup: They are also famous for eating carotenoid-rich organic matter to naturally dye their face feathers a vibrant, bright yellow. Talk about a dramatic skincare routine!

This original 6x6 inch oil is officially available! To honor these sky guardians, a portion of the proceeds from this sale will be donated directly to the Center for Birds of Prey to support vital raptor medicine, conservation, and global education efforts.

THE MATING RITUALS SERIES: PART 2 🎨🕺💙

Moving from the dramatic rainforest canopy straight to the coastlines for Part 2 of my series exploring the wildest courtships in the avian world! Say hello to the ultimate awkward dance king: the Blue-footed B***y.

These birds don't rely on fancy architecture or hidden capes, they rely entirely on footwear and pure choreography:

👣 The Neon High-Tops: Their bright blue feet are everything. The color comes directly from pigments in their fresh fish diet. The brighter, more intense neon blue tells the female, "I am a phenomenal hunter and highly healthy."

🕺 The High-Stepping Parade: To start the ritual, the male slow-motion marches directly in front of the female, lifting each foot ridiculously high into the air as if to say, "Look closely at these blue beauties.”

☁️ The Grand Salute: If she likes what she sees, they enter the finale called "sky-pointing." Both birds point their beaks straight up to the heavens, stretch their wings out wide, and let out a series of high-pitched whistles.

Some of you might recognize this charmingly awkward bird as the unofficial mascot for Warby Parker. They even opened a literal Museum of the Blue-Footed B***y at one of their NYC locations because the bird's iconic feet inspired their signature brand color. Hoping to make it there one day! 👓💙🐦

Store mascot aside, I'm a huge fan of their frames myself! Swipe to see me wearing mine at last year's Paint Creek Center for the Arts Haunted art opening. It's crazy that this year's show is exactly one month away on October 2nd. Excited to have two of my paintings on display there! 🎃🎨

THE MATING RITUALS SERIES: PART 1 🎨🔥

To kick off my brand new series exploring the wild, beautiful, and downright bizarre mating rituals of birds, I had to start with the ultimate artist of the avian world: the Flame Bowerbird.

Found in the rainforests of New Guinea, the male Flame Bowerbird is a visual masterpiece on his own, but his courtship behavior is next-level:

🏡 The Bachelor Pad: He spends days building a "bower" (an intricate avenue of twigs) and decorates the courtyard with color-coordinated berries and shells just to get a female to look at him.

🧛‍♂️ The Dracula Wing: He dramatically raises his vibrant wing like Dracula pulling up his cape, hiding his beak and leaving only his intense, flashing eye visible to hypnotize the female.

🫨 The Vibrating Hiss: He puffs out one wing, holds a berry in his beak, and vibrates his entire body while making a mechanical buzzing sound.
