Do you ever feel like your brain won't turn off?

I've been there. Actually, I was just there this week.

With my kids just starting 2nd grade, kindergarten, and preschool, plus a two-year-old on my hip, my house is a fluttery blur of alphabet handouts and laundry up to my ears. Staring at the mess makes my brain instantly loop to: how will I get it all done?

Usually, when I feel that overwhelm (hi, you’re not alone), my go-to is a big sweeping giant-solution idea. Like a two-week vacation to a deserted island. Or, more realistically, I just collapse on the couch and doom-scroll for three hours to numb the noise.

But here’s what I’m realizing: escaping into my phone doesn’t actually give my brain rest.

The real rest and reprieve comes from doing something tactile. Stepping outside. Getting my hands in the dirt. Putting a jar of fresh sunflowers on the messy kitchen counter.

Flowers remind me to slow down. Not everything needs to get done right now. We have plenty of time.

I’m not behind, and neither are you.

The quickest way to ruin a Saturday is expecting him to read your mind. 

I remember in our dating days (and early in our marriage, too) I used to get this deep, brewing, icky feeling of disappointment when Jamiahus didn’t somehow magically know exactly how I wanted to spend our day off together. 

It felt like if it wasn’t his idea, with no help from me, then that was somehow an indication of his love for me. 

Please learn from my mistakes: IT’S NOT. 

Our brains and hearts all work so differently. Unless you are partnered up with an exact carbon copy of yourself (unlikely) chances are they aren’t operating inside of a romantic comedy where the male hero knows just what to say and do at just the right moment. That’s not real life.

Unprompted surprises are great, but explicitly asking for a beautiful Saturday morning is just as romantic (and way more reliable). 

So, if you’re staring at your screen right now wishing for a romantic, offline weekend... this is your sign to just tell him!
