See the guy on the left? No hat, no shirt, no sunglasses, sitting exposed for hours on open water. Between the direct sun and the glare bouncing off the lake, he's stacking up UV exposure fast — and probably won't feel it until tonight.
Water trips are sneaky for sun damage because:
🌊 Water and metal/boat surfaces reflect UV rays back at you — you're getting hit from two directions
💨 A breeze on the water makes you feel cool, so you don't notice you're burning
⏰ Hours on a boat = hours of continuous, often unbroken exposure
☁️ Cloud cover (like on this day) still lets most UV through — overcast isn't a free pass
What the other guys are doing better:
🧢 Hats to shield the face and scalp
😎 Sunglasses to protect the eyes and thin under-eye skin
👕 Shirts = built-in SPF wherever they're covered
Moral of the story: reapply sunscreen every 2 hours on the water, cover up with UPF50 hats, clothing and sunglasses when you can, and don't let a breeze fool you into thinking you're safe.
Don't be the guy on the left. 😬
