Powell s/n 2133

One of the Last Old Powells

Verne Q. Powell flute #2133, made in 1961, Commercial French Model, drawn tone hole, .016+”, solid silver, open hole, Y-arms, inline G, Bb shake, B-foot with gizmo, gold springs, no adjusting screws, Straubinger pads, A=440 traditional scale.

Commercial Powell flutes are something of a hidden gem in the used handmade flute market, especially those made during Verne Q. Powell’s era. Aside from features like drawn tone holes and Y-arms, these “Commercial” models are essentially identical to the flutes marketed as Handmade. Even the footjoint construction is the same, with a separate socket box joint that is soldered on rather than extruded from the body.

Powell #2133 was made in the year of Powell’s retirement. It is in excellent condition and ready to play. It has a robust sound that is easy to control and articulate. Its tone reflects the classic silvery character of vintage Powells - long associated with most major American orchestral flute sections prior to the 1980s. This vintage Powell is a true workhorse, built for everyday professional use. It will easily outlast any flute built today at the same or twice the price point. It comes in a modern French case in good condition

Maker’s marks are on all three joints, serial number on the body only.

Flutemakers of Australia s/n 9458

A Boutique Handmade Flute

Flutemakers of Australia flute #9458, likely made around, 1985. Solid silver, plateau model, drawn tone hole, .016", offset G, C # trill, C-foot, Bb shake, gold springs, faceted rings, felt pads, modern scale, A=442.

Flutemakers of Australia, a Sydney-based flute company, was founded in the late 1970s by John Lehner and Ray Holliday as the first specialist flute maker in the country. Mark O’Connor joined the company in 1987, later assumed management, and ultimately purchased the business in 1995.

#9458 is in good condition, plays all the way down to low C on older pads. An overhaul will bring the flute up to peak performance, but even as is, it remains enjoyable to play. The lipplate design is unique that it has a subtle "wave" element that Lehner advertised it as raised lipplate. It is not extreme or even obvious, but the result is a big sound with many different colors, quick articulations, easy to control and a comfortable feel on the chin. The key work is well made, showing influence from the Boston school of flutemaking since Lehner completed a research sabbatical at the Powell workshop in Boston. On our flute, the F # tone hole has been replaced with a soldered tone hole, likely a repair after damage to the original. It comes in a wooden case in poor condition.

Maker’s mark on both the headjoint and the body, serial number on headjoint only.

The embouchure hole measures 10.1 x 11.9 mm.

Sounding length is 597 mm.

Headjoint length is 8-3/4”.

The flute weighs 442 grams.

Price is $2,000 USD, $60 shipping to USA.

Haynes #51210

Robert Winn Scale Solid 14K Gold Flute

Wm. S. Haynes Flute serial #51210, made in 2001. 14K solid gold, handmade French model, 18K riser, soldered tone holes, open hole, pointed arms, no adjustment screws, inline G, C-foot, Bb shake, .012” tubing, garnet on crown, forged keys and touches, gold springs, felt pads, jeweled crown, Robert Winn scale, A=442.

Between 1999 and 2002, Haynes was making some very exciting instruments during the final years of John Fuggetta’s ownership of the company. He collaborated with Jacque Zoon to reintroduce the Haynes wood flute. He brought in Johan Brögger to incorporate the Brögger mechanism into the existing Haynes keywork. Only about 15 wood flutes and 20 Brögger flutes were made. To offer an option to the Deveau scale, Fuggetta adopted the Robert Winn scale, a variation on the Cooper and William scales, offering its own subtleties and flavors. Closed to 80 flutes were produced.

After Fuggetta’s untimely death in 2001, his family assumed control of the business, and the ambitious new projects he had initiated gradually came to a halt. His efforts to super charge and modernize the long-standing traditions of the Haynes Co. were ultimately left unrealized.

Haynes #51210 is in excellent condition, ready to play. Its sound is resonant, full, and vibrant, with a quick response and a wide dynamic range. The Winn scale feels balanced and even, similar to the William Bennett scale, well suited to the British style of flute playing, and with a C-foot to boot. This flute represents an artistic interpretation of the golden age gold Haynes flutes, reimagined in a modern scale format by John Fuggetta - the last owner/operator of the Haynes empire. The exquisite beauty in both its tone and traditional craftsmanship is beyond words. With today’s elevated gold price, the intrinsic value of the metal alone is worth the asking price. It comes in its original case in good condition.

Maker’s mark and serial number on body only. Monogram on all 3 joints.

The embouchure hole measures 10.5 x 12.4 mm.

Sounding length is 594 mm.

Headjoint length is 8-7/8”.

The flute weighs 457 grams.
