Part of my grand plans here involve the necessity of investigation of things.
From general life things to special interest things. Much of my life I have been on a mission to discover why do I know what I know and how do I know what I know.
In my mid twenties when I started Fly Free, I was having an identity crisis. I was very uncertain as I wasn’t quite able to put into words what my family had just done. However, I knew I was going to have to unlearn most of what I thought I knew at that point if I didn’t want to become like what my sister already was.
So in some dusty studios, I let my curiosity run rampant. It turns out I am very curious about history, geology, metallurgy, science, space, art, ya know, the basics. All of these subjects contribute to the jewelry I make.
I have some questions that I thought we could group solve in the coming weeks, but before I jump in w***y nilly, I thought we could go over some reference materials (so excited).
May I present the chart, the board and the map. First the chart: the correlated history of matter! This chart has the periodic table on it. The periodic table contains the building blocks of the fabric of our reality and weird and wonderful combinations of elements are the gemstones I get to use in my work. Curiouser.
Then the board. I don’t have a tv and I work a lot so I listen to all of the things. Documentaries, podcasts, audiobooks, you name it. If I am listening to a thing and a word is said that makes haven’t heard in awhile or there is a concept I don’t understand (neutrinos are left handed?) then I write it down here for further investigation. And curiouser!
Finally, the map. A histomap is a very useful thing for linking long chains of historical data together. Instead of a start and stop sequence, like a history book, a histomap is four thousand years of world history; mapping out the rise and fall of empires along side one another. What sparkling conversation!
This is usually where people intrinsically know two things: I spend A LOT of time alone and that I nerd out so hard on gemstones cause I like it like that.
