The Irish Brigade was a renowned unit in the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War, composed largely of Irish immigrants. Formed in 1861, it included regiments like New York’s Fighting 69th. Known for bravery and fierce fighting, the brigade played key roles in battles such as Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. Often suffering heavy casualties, their motto was “Fág an Bealach” (“Clear the Way”). The Irish Brigade remains a symbol of immigrant patriotism and valor in American military history.
