Check out my 1990s typeface Augustinian from a category I would call historical grunge. I am picturing this doing the heavy lifting in everything from captions and titles in documentaries to w**e labels. It’s kind of nuts that the smaller it gets, the more legible it becomes.

Not so long ago I published a new typeface with TypeNetwork. It’s called Jupette, which is French and means mini skirt. It has soft corners so it feels like it is blending into the background like letterpress type or also a little like photo type. It looks great in videos. I just tried that and it looks just so period, especially with a little halation and diffusion. While I was working on it I imagined that it is breathing the spirit of the French Riviera round about 1956. The shapes are so straight forward that it works easily for text but the details are so cheeky and the weight range so extreme that it really excels in large size. Please check this out, share it, talk about it and make this social media thing work for my new darling little Jupette. Also, give it a whirl. You can get it here:

Spread the word! This fall I will teach a public class in 10 sessions. Pen, paper, sketching, drawing and then digitizing. I think it's going to be fun. If you wonder why certain parts of letters are thick and others are thin, why the e is always a little wider than the a and what makes letters look like they belong to the same typeface, this class might be for you. Total beginners are welcome.

In the 1990s I created a series of display fonts that I called the Jetsam Collection. A number of them are now available at Adobe Fonts. The last two in this series jcCorrido and jcBubbleJet are still only available from Type Network at www.famirafonts.com.

I drew my typeface Arouet to lend body text as well as titling sizes a voice of authority with a warm heart.

Specs for the typographic specialists (a.k.a. The Kantenschleifer):

• Comes in the weights Black, Bold, Regular and Light.
• Language support for Latin Extended-A plus complete Cyrillic
• Elegant, long ascenders and descenders that can be separately turned into extremely short extenders for very dense text like dictionaries, bibles etc.
• Small caps with small cap figures
• Proportional lining figures, old style figures and tabular lining figures
• Each of the sets of numerals come with their own set of currency symbols, math characters and punctuation marks.
• Alternative “Petite” characters to keep apertures and counters open in very small text sizes
• Rich in subtle details to keep character shapes charming, even in very large size.
• Decisively cut shapes and distribution of weight that keeps Arouet’s flavor present even in small body text sizes while avoiding a distractingly decorative presence.

Much gratitude goes to Zrinka Buljubašić of Dualtype for being my patient Cyrillic teacher.

I drew the logo for the Peter&James brand made famous by the show Emily in Paris, which showcased their exclusive, hand crafted butterfly bag that can be worn as a backpack but then folds up to transform into a purse.
